In an announcement to make all genre fans shiver, Paul W.S Anderson the director of such classics as ALIEN VS PREDATOR and SOLDIER will be bringing a found footage series to television. This must surely be the final nail in the coffin for the found footage sub-genre.

The auteur who directed EVENT HORIZON has teamed up with eOne Entertainment and his regular producer Jeremy Bolt to develop a one hour thriller named THE REEL from first time writer Adam D’Alba.

Here’s eOne’s official synopsis:

‘A young documentarian searches for evidence of the supernatural. His first case concerns the mysterious last days of two teenagers and a serial killer, known as the Mirror Mask Killer, who uses various forms of psychological torment to exact bloody vengeance on its victims. THE REEL combines supernatural shocks in a case-per-week format that leads viewers through a season long mystery.’

As far as I know found footage hasn’t been attempted on TV yet unless you include that episode from season 7 of the X-FILES where Mulder and Scully were the subject of a COPS style TV show. I could be wrong but I don’t see how they can sustain a whole TV series on the found footage concept.

Prove me wrong Mr Anderson, prove me wrong…
