News of the much-anticipated Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special remains frustratingly thin on the ground beyond the fact that there’s going to be one and Matt Smith will be in it. Most fans have their own wish-list of famous old faces from the show’s long history they’d like to see wheeled out to join the celebrations but so far it seems that almost everyone who’s ever been in the show is being evasive and making polite coughing noises when the subject comes up. But today one fan favourite stuck his head up over the parapet and announced that – at last! – he’s in discussion about a possible return to the show later this year. John Barrowman, currently starring as Malcolm Merlyn in the CW Network’s hit ‘superhero’ series Arrow and better known as saucy immortal time-traveller and erstwhile alien hunter Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood excitedly revealed on ITV’s lightweight lifestyle/entertainment daytime show This Morning (hosted by Eamonn ‘who ate all the pies?‘ Holmes) that as of extremely recently – presumably within the last 24 hours – the BBC’s people have been talking to his people and that Jack – last seen in the iffy 2011 ten-part ’Miracle Day’ Torchwood series  – may well soon be back in action in Doctor Who. Expect further casting announcements and revelations in the next few weeks as the Anniversary special is due to begin filming in Cardiff in April.

Doctor Who starring Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman returns to BBC1 and BBC America on 30th March 2013.
