In an astonishing turn of events, it was announced at the National Film Theatre today that two new episodes of missing Doctor Who have now been recovered.

The episodes in question are Airlock, episode three of the William Hartnell story Galaxy Four, and episode two of the Patrick Troughton story The Underwater Menace (of which episode three already exists). Airlock is the only complete episode of Galaxy Four known to survive.

There are now 106 missing episodes of Doctor Who, after the BBC junked much of its early black and white material during the mid-1970s, not realising the value of its old stock. The last episode of Doctor Who to be recovered was Day of Armageddon, episode two of the first Doctor story The Daleks’ Master Plan, which was found in 2004.

How long will it be before any more missing Doctor Who episodes are found, and which will they be?
