Disney has revealed the first image from Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron cyber-tech adventure movie franchise, which finally went into production in January.

Starring Jared Leto, the film follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

The original Tron released in 1982 and starred Jeff Bridges as a video game designer who is transported inside his own creation and teams up with Tron, a security program. The 2010 sequel brought back Bridges but took on a generational approach to the story by bringing in new characters. Tron: Ares, however, will focus on the emergence of a sentient program in the human world.

The project is directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson also star.

In a statement accompanying the release of the first look Tron still, Rønning said, “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. ‘TRON: Ares’ builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

Tron: Ares is due to release sometime in 2025. Check out the first-look image below:
