Yes there may have been some news about some sequel or other getting a subtitle, but Disney also announced today that another massive franchise is making a welcome return to the big screen.

The company has revealed a fourth TOY STORY movie, to be directed by John Lasseter, and released in 2017.

There are no other details as yet, but we’d be amazed if stars Tom Hanks (Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz) don’t reappear, along with a host of supporting characters. (And if Timothy Dalton’s Mister Pricklepants doesn’t return we may seriously have to consider boycotting it. And yes, that’s his character name, not code for anything naughty. We wouldn’t even go there. The man’s a national treasure for god’s sake.)

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. TOY STORY 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another TOY STORY movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Lasseter, of course, is one of the head honchos of Pixar, either directing or co-directing the first two TOY STORY movies, as well as both CARS movies (nobody’s perfect) and has been being heavily involved in all the studio’s output. In 2006, he became chief creative officer at Disney, and is widely credited with the resurgence of the company’s animated output, culminating in last year’s FROZEN – the biggest grossing animated film in history.

Whilst were slightly concerned that a fourth movie might not quite live up to the, frankly perfect first three instalments, new TOY STORY is brilliant news. The campaign to bring back Emperor Zurg starts here!
