With The Flash having brought its second season to a potentially game-changing conclusion, star Grant Gustin has taken to Twitter to reveal the title of the Season 3 premiere.

The show’s Scarlet Speedster confirmed that the first episode of the next season will be titled Flashpoint. Some of you may be wondering why that’s such a big deal, and it all has to do with a particular comic book arc of the same name. It goes without saying, but there’s Season 2 spoilers from here on out…

The final moments of the hugely popular show’s second year saw Gustin’s Barry Allen actually travel back in time to stop the death of his mother, which is a decision that could have huge ramifications for the present day. It was already revealed by Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash in the first season that Barry was always destined to become The Flash, just Thawne travelling back in time to kill Nora Allen was a move done to make Barry become the Sultan of Speed sooner than the timeline had initially intended.

In the comic book realm, the fantastic Flashpoint arc saw Barry doing the same thing; going back in time to save his beloved mother. What followed, though, was a completely changed present day world, most notably with the Justice League having never come to be, Wonder Woman and Aquaman at war with one another’s realms, Thomas Wayne becoming Batman and Martha Wayne becoming The Joker after Bruce Wayne was killed that night in Crime Alley, a weak Superman being held by the military, and Captain Cold being Central City’s famous hero rather than The Flash.

Titling the Season 3 premiere as Flashpoint certainly seems to suggest that we can expect some major changes when The Flash returns, although we’ll have to wait and see just what those changes are.

Season 3 of The Flash has recently been confirmed to premiere in the US on October 4th, with a UK airing hopefully following shortly after.
