In a new report, the NY Daily News is claiming that Paramount Pictures has finally “killed” the Terminator franchise once and for all… ish.

Remember when Terminator: Genisys was to be the start of a whole new trilogy of films? Yeah, that didn’t go well, with Genisys being so-so at best and stupidly revealing its massive surprise twist during its early trailers. While certain parts of the film were indeed intriguing and gave an interesting alternative look at what we thought we already knew about the franchise, Genisys ultimately fell flat with fans and critics alike, plus didn’t quite hit the box office heights that Paramount was hoping for despite overall making a decent profit.

As such, the planned new trilogy was capped at just the one movie, and since then the franchise has had an uncertain future. In fact, it was only earlier this year that stories surfaced to claim that franchise creator James Cameron was set to regain control of the series.

The NY Daily News’ source claims that Paramount has now admitted defeat and completely pulled any future Terminator movie(s) from their production plans after the studio higher-ups took heed of what fans and critics said about Genisys.

Of course, Paramount is merely the distribution house that has control over the franchise. Just because they have not decided against making any further Terminator movies doesn’t mean that we won’t get any future Terminator movies, full stop.

As mentioned, there’s talk that the cinematic rights may well be returning to Cameron in the future, and it’s believed that Paramount would have to put another Terminator picture into production by the end of this year to stop a legal battle over the rights to the series.

To many industry insiders, the word is that Paramount is in a bit of a funk right now. Not only did several people turn down a Vice-Chairman role with the company, but Rings – which they had a whole lot of faith and hope in – ended up bombing, and they also recently pulled the plug on their Friday the 13th reboot.

As per the recent stories of Cameron regaining control of the Terminator franchise, it was said that the iconic director would merely be producing this time out and that Deadpool helmer Tim Miller would be the man tasked with directing a new Terminator feature. Cameron, of course, created the whole franchise, putting together the original 1984 movie. While he wrote and directed that film, he sold the rights to producer/co-writer Gale Anne Hurd for just $1 so that he would be allowed to direct one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all-time. Cameron, much like Arnold Schwarzenegger, would indeed be back for the 1991 follow-up, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. That was the last direct involvement Cameron would have with the series, and it’s fair to say that the franchise has struggled in its subsequent outings.

So, it appears as if Paramount Pictures is putting the final nails into the Terminator coffin. Now it remains to be seen whether Jim Cameron will look to resurrect this once-beloved sci-fi franchise.
