Willem Dafoe is lurking in Corey Hawkins‘ basement in the aptly titled The Man in My Basement, for which the trailer has just been released.
The psychological thriller will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, before opening in select cinemas on September 12th. It will then land on Hulu and Disney+ later this autumn.
In the neighbourhood of Sag Harbor, New York, Charles Blakey (Hawkins) is unemployed, down on his luck, and on the verge of foreclosure on his ancestral home. A knock on the door from a mysterious businessman, Anniston Bennet (Dafoe), brings a strange yet lucrative proposition: rent out his unused basement for the summer and receive a payment large enough to wipe out his debts.
Accepting the deal, Charles soon finds himself on a terrifying path that confronts his family’s ghosts, locking the two men in a dreadful game that reaches to the very root of evil.
Nadia Latif makes her feature directorial debut from a script she co-wrote with Walter Mosley, itself based on Mosley’s 2004 novel of the same name. Also starring in The Man in My Basement are Anna Diop, Jonathan Ajayi, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr., Pamela Nomvete, and Tamara Lawrance.
