Whilst the upcoming big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower seemed to be in development hell for years before finally becoming ‘a thing’, now comes word that the film’s release has actually been pushed back.

The Dark Tower, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, was initially set for a February 17th, 2017 release, but now Sony Pictures has revealed that the movie has been pushed back to July 28th, 2017. That July 2017 date was previously marked for the Dwayne Johnson-starring Jumanji, but that film has subsequently been pushed back to December 22nd, 2017.

The most recent official blurb on The Dark Tower simply said:

A gunslinger (Idris Elba) and an evil sorcerer (Matthew McConaughey) embark on a journey to reach a mystical tower that can save their decaying world.

As well as Elba as Roland Deschain/The Gunslinger and McConaughey as Randall Flag/The Man in Black, the rest of the cast is made up of Tom Taylor as Jake Cambers, Abbey Lee as Tirana, Fran Kranz as Pimli, and unknown roles for Jackie Earle Haley, Katheryn Winnick, and Claudia Kim.

This upcoming movie isn’t a direct adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, which itself is made up of a whole host of novels. Instead, the film is being described as a continuation and remix of sorts of the novels that will focus on the final steps of The Gunslinger’s mission to find the titular tower. A Royal Affair’s Nikolaj Arcel is on directing duties.
