The main Squid Game series may be set to end after season three drops this year, but it’s unlikely to be the last we see of the hugely popular Korean franchise. According to the latest report, Hwang Dong-hyuk has a few ideas about how the series could lead to other spin-offs.

Squid Game has been one of the greatest hits in Netflix’s history, so the streaming platform will be desperate to continue it in as many ways as possible. It’s encouraging to know that the genius behind the original wants to create more content in the Squid Game universe as well.

Huge Hit Already Becoming Sprawling Universe

Squid Game season one was the most-watched series ever on Netflix with over 2.2 billion viewing hours, thanks to it becoming a social media sensation and a viral hit. It was originally intended to be a limited series, but there was no way that Netflix could leave it at that after it posted such amazing numbers. This led to Dong-hyuk coming up with a second and third season in the main series.

The Korean offering has also led to a couple of spin-offs already that have helped to expand its universe. For instance, there’s the reality competition, Squid Game: The Challenge, which involves real people competing in similar games to those featured in the series. In a more surprising spin-off, there’s also the Squid Game – Gganbu slot game, which is one of the top Canada casino online games among other popular offerings like Sweet Bonanza 1000 and Big Bass Floats My Boat. This highlights just how much Squid Game has permeated Western culture, and how audiences in North America are hungry for more content in the franchise.

What are the Main Ideas for Spinoffs?

Although season three is likely to wrap up Seong Gi-hun’s character arc, there are plenty of directions that spin-offs could go in to give viewers a greater sense of the Squid Game world. One idea that Dong-hyuk is considering exploring is the wide time gap that occurred between the first two seasons. According to the showrunner, there was a three-year gap, and it would be interesting to see what the frontman was doing all that time.

Another option could be to delve into the backstories of some of the other characters in the show. This could follow the model of Better Call Saul, which explored the earlier lives of three of the most popular characters from Breaking Bad.

American Version Could Be in the Pipeline

In addition to future instalments to the Korean series, there could be English-language offerings in the pipeline. It was reported that David Fincher is a huge fan of the series, and may be interested in making his own version set in the USA.

The good news is that, if that is to happen, it won’t be a direct remake of the Korean series. It will use a lot of the same themes, but it will be a brand-new story that helps to expand the Squid Game universe in new ways.

The original Squid Game may be set to end this year, but this won’t be the last we see of the iconic franchise. There will be many spinoffs in the future, giving viewers a chance to learn more about the mysterious games.
