FORMAT: 4K BLU-RAY / RELEASE DATE: DECEMBER 14TH
Tremors is the story of a group of misfits in a remote town in the Nevada desert battling for survival against a race of hideous, man-eating subterranean worms. It’s also the story of a film that sank without trace when it was released in 1990 but flourished in the early days of the home video explosion to become a genuine cult hit spawning a string of cheap-and-cheerful direct-to-DVD sequels (and one prequel) and a short-lived television series.
Arrow Video commemorates the film’s thirtieth anniversary with this delicious new features-packed special edition. The film itself, of course, is as good as ever; Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward play repairmen Val and Earl, eking out a living in the small desert town of Perfection, ready to try their luck elsewhere when they meet up with seismologist Rhonda (Finn Carter) and are soon helping the few inhabitants of the town fight off the advances of the ferocious ‘graboids’ swarming under the sands. Tremors has never looked better. The new 4K transfer is sparkling and the film looks bright and vibrant. It’s unusual for a genre film to take place almost completely in daylight but the film’s largely on-screen mechanical effects have really stood the test of time and the film’s refreshing mix of witty dialogue, likeable characters and awesome monster action remains as thrilling and winning now as it was in 1990.
Extras include a 60-page book, posters, art cards, new commentaries, candid documentaries on the how the film was brought to a screen by a studio that never quite understood how to market a quirky monster movie and Pardon my French, which compares scenes from the theatrical version with the dubbed TV versions removing profanity and swearing. It’s a trem-endous package.
