Top Trumps is a game that is so simple it barely qualifies as a game. For those who have never had the pleasure, Top Trumps is a card game where the aim is to predict the best card in any given circumstance, depending on the theme of the card.
Top Trumps Scary Flix is a deck of cards all about horror movies. Each movie is rated by Budget, Survival Rate, Sequels & Prequels, Cult Status, Soundtrack and ‘Top Trumps Fear Factor’. So basically to play this game, you have figure out what stats are better than your opponents on any given card.
But let’s be honest, this edition of Top Trumps isn’t really a game. It’s more a symptom of fannish glee. The cards serve as handy totems for various classic horror, the deck is essentially a handy guide to thirty of the most chilling horror movies out there.
It’s a diverse range of movies on display, everything from Get Out to Nosferatu. It also serves as a bit of a history lesson of the genre, summarising the most commercially successful horror movies in a handy card format. There are some off-the-wall choices in the deck, perhaps to throw the odd curveball. For example the excellent Ginger Snaps gets a card, despite the movie not being terribly well known or that successful. Still, the people at Top Trumps thing that The Descent has the same level of cult status as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. We are not sure we agree.
And that, really, is the real draw of Top Trumps Scary Flix. The game itself is less important than getting into a fun debate with a friend about various horror movies. As a conversation starter and an icebreaker for all sorts of spooky fun, this is a perfect icebreaker for a Halloween party.
