SAUSAGE PARTY

It was mid-2016 and a trailer seemingly came from nowhere. Playing like a fuzzy, heartwarming animated affair that we’re all far too accustomed to these days, suddenly the trailer took a sweary, violent turn as you realised that Sausage Party was certainly not a Disney Pixar effort that you could use to keep your rugrats entertained for a few hours. No, this was a very different beast entirely – and now, this food-driven adult comedy is out on DVD and Blu-ray.

Where the plot is concerned, the central premise revolves around a group of everyday supermarket items who all strive for one thing: to be “chosen” and taken to the great beyond. That means the apparent Valhalla that comes with being purchased and taken out of the store. Unfortunately for our core group of characters, they find out the harsh and brutal reality that this apparent heaven isn’t what it seems. Sliced, diced, cooked and eaten, the dream of being taken home has been shattered and revealed to be a complete nightmare. Led by Frank (Seth Rogen), a sausage desperate to be united with his beloved bun Brenda (Kristen Wiig), a group of ragtag food items look to explore their very existence and question all that they’d been led to believe was true about life.

To give some perspective, if you go into Sausage Party expecting something akin to My Little Pony, you’re going to be surprised by something that’s more in tune with Drawn Together. Whilst this is certainly not your usual, fluffy animated adventure, it’s still nevertheless a brilliant comedy movie. Sure, it’s maybe not exactly highbrow comedy at its finest, but Sausage Party is a hilarious, vulgar, crude, smutty film that will have you snickering at jokes you’d like to think that you’re above.

If you’ve seen any Seth Rogen/Jonah Hill/Judd Apatow vehicle over the past decade, you’ll have an idea of what to expect here when it comes to the sort of humour you’ll see in Sausage Party. Complete with a huge ensemble cast including the likes of Paul Rudd, James Franco, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, Craig Robinson, Nick Kroll, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek alongside headliners Rogen, Hill and Kristen Wiig, this is like throwing This is the End into a blender with Drawn Together and a dash of cuddly CGI.

Silly, crass, yet genuinely laugh-out-loud funny for the most part, Sausage Party is a comedy effort that you’ll find massively entertaining despite some of the snooty looks you might get from some when you regale them with stories about how you spent 2 hours laughing at animated food making excessive dick jokes.
