The premise behind Gabriel Featherstone’s latest stand-up comedy show is that he, Gabriel Featherstone, is the funniest comedian on Earth. Because the world has ended in nuclear Armageddon, and he’s the only comedian left. It’s a fun bit, and also a slightly harsh self-assessment of Gabriel’s comic talent.
Robocop Vs The Terminator Vs Gabriel Featherstone is as surreal and silly as the title is long. The show claims to end in a death-match between all three people mentioned in the title, but we’re pretty sure that if both Robocop and Terminator were going to turn up, the tiny fringe venue wouldn’t be able to hold their weight. But that said, maybe it could. Featherstone’s talent could certainly carry both of them.
The act is mostly a series of very dark skits, stitched together with an apocalyptic vibe. It’s very British in places, with Paddington Bear and High Street shopping being key topics of the act. The tone is uneven, and there are bits that felt rough around the edges. Regardless, it is very, very good.
Reminiscent of Richard Herring at his most surreal, Featherstone’s act is an interesting mix of utter fantasy, inane nonsense and a steady drip of insanity that makes for a memorable (and rather funny) show. Weird, in all senses of the word.
This is a solid, entertaining act, and we’ll be following Gabriel with interest. An exciting and clever talent, one to watch out for.
