Mythic Quest returns with its Season 2 premiere fresh off the back of last month’s special. The main story arc focuses on Ian, Poppy, and David trying to come up with the title of the new expansion for the game. Ian gives up pretty quick and decides to go the desert for a week on some kind of MMA camp. Sadly, none of this is seen and it’s just left to our imaginations. This unfortunately means that outside a few of Poppy’s sex dreams, we don’t get a whole lot of Rob McElhlenny this week. As with Season 1 though, the star of the show is still very much Poppy. Her reactions to the sex dreams and her attempt at ‘girl chat’ are some of the funniest moments the show has had so far.
The rest of the cast are a bit out of focus this episode. Rachel and Dana’s ‘will they, won’t they’ story finally takes off with the help of Carol from HR, who continues to be treated like a therapist. It’s establish that Jo has officially left her role of David’s assistant for Brad, which has potential but they’re barely in this episode at all. C.W. makes a small cameo.
The episode manages to combine plenty of laughs, with some story progression, but unfortunately not much character development. There’s still a few too many characters that feel like they don’t bring anything to table. Mythic Quest is at its best when it leans more into its Park and Rec-like oddities and lore and it needs more of this if it wants success.
Titans’ Rift is a decent return for the show, but hardly a triumphant one. Too many characters were bit-part players in this one, and they definitely jumped the gun with Dana and Rachel storyline. Their scenes don’t tend to be filled with laughs, so now they’re together it’ll be interesting to see if they still get as much screen time. The season has its prices in place now though so let’s see how the new dynamics workout.
