Described as a more adult-orientated take on Disney’s Inside Out, this book from Daniel Brodie and Robert Jennex is definitely an interesting premise full of possibilities and potential. Of course, there’s always the chance that this could merely be a gimmick embraced to sell some funny books, but then there’s also the chance that this could be a rather charming little number. So, let’s find out what’s what with the intriguing Morgan’s Organs.
To get you up to speed on the story at play here, young Morgan is your regular everyday university student. His problem, though, is that he’s desperate to get himself some bedroom action. And with Morgan’s Organs giving personalities and attention to the titular fella’s various organs, we get treated to what essentially comes down to a battle between Bran and Pepe; Bran being the brain that outright controls Morgan’s activity, Pepe being the needy, self-centred bulge that resides in Morgan’s pants. While Bran is happy to play it coy and take proceedings at a steady pace, Pepe is desperate for Morgan to find himself a girlfriend or just anybody at all in which he can find some sort of release and get himself some satisfaction.
A little bit out there? Sure. But while the premise could maybe be seen as excessive, erratic and a little gimmicky, instead we get an engaging, entertaining and humourous read the flows at a strong pace while also exploring territory that we’ve all likely seen throughout our lives. While it could easily be written off as tacky ‘dick ‘n’ fart gags’ fodder to some – and there’s nothing wrong with that at times – Morgan’s Organs is a fun journey to explore, with Brodie applying a whole host of charming, chuckle-heavy dialogue to the narrative, while Jennex’s art perfectly captures the energy and spirit of the story.
Head to Head is sure to tick off a whole host of boxes for genre fans, and it’s a rather special introduction to what could (and should!) be a standout title for Daniel Brodie and Robert Jennex. Smutty, slapstick yet spectacularly striking in its approach and relatability, this is a battle of the heads that’s an absolute riot to watch unravel.
