Starter sets are the bread and butter of all good miniatures ranges. A well-produced starter set is essentially a stand-alone board game that can be expanded and modified later on. If the game in the starter is fun, then you’re more likely to collect the rest of the range. Heroclix Battlegrounds: Avengers Vs Masters Of Evil is a box crammed full of heroes and villains, likely to appeal to anyone who has heard of The Avengers.
We get ten models in the box. They’re pre-painted and the sculpts are good though nothing ground-breaking. They are all in ‘hero pose’, so they look like they’re just about to do something, with the exception of Captain Marvel, who’s in mid-flight. The set also includes Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Hulk, and The Winter Soldier. We also get Baron Zemo, Red Skull, Ultron and Mach-X. The latter isn’t movie famous, but basically he’s an evil Iron Man.
We get four maps – a SHIELD Helicarrier, Iron Man’s Workshop, ULTRON’s Lair and a sinister HYDRA Castle, and of course they are a pair of dice with The Avengers logo on them. We also get a load of tokens, including the some hero markers to use in various scenarios that come with the game. The rulebook is a little thick but this is Heroclix; it’s pretty straight forward and really the rules are just being clear rather than complicated.
With enough models and options to allow up to four players to get involved, this works very well as a stand-alone game. The fact that you could also add the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man or The X-Men to your roster is really just a bonus. As such this works brilliantly as both an expansion to existing collections and as a starter set. Worth a look.
