It’s another doozy of an episode for Harley Quinn that really encapsulates what makes this show so good. If you’ve been following our coverage here over the past few months you’ll know that this season has been nothing short of stellar, and Lovers’ Quarrel perfectly sums up why.
We’ve got action aplenty with Ivy under Psycho’s control and the Justice League determined to take her down; we’ve got villains galore with both Psycho and Darkseid in play this week; and we’ve got romance in spades as both Harley and Kite Man want to bring their true love back. It’s an incredible week, and we’re betting there’ll be floods of tears come the finale.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. It’s a very linear episode this week, with much of the runtime devoted to Harley and the Justice League almost teaming up to stop Ivy and Psycho, and it’s bags of fun. The action is light on blood but packed with energy, as exciting and frenetic as we’ve come to expect. The League are a welcome presence this week, adding a more heroic touch to the show’s usually dark antics, and Diedrich Bader, Vanessa Marshall and James Wolk have excellent chemistry as DC’s Trinity – watching Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman team up to stop the mind-controlled Ivy, King Shark and Clayface is absolutely delightful.
For all its fantastic action beats, though, what really makes this episode work is its romance. Never has Harley Quinn been so well-written outside of a comic book: her relationship with Ivy is beautifully drawn together, and this episode goes out of its way to make explicit what’s been implicit for so long – that the two are simply made for each other. After Kite Man tries and fails to free Ivy with the power of true love, it’s actually Harley who gets her out with a kiss. It’s a beautiful and exciting moment, tragically undercut by Psycho going full incel and beaming video footage of Harley and Ivy’s night together into the Gotham sky. Dick move, man.
There’s no hiding for the pair anymore: with the wedding right around the corner it’s time for Ivy to make a choice – and we don’t even want to begin thinking about which way she might go. Either would work, certainly: the series is known for its tragic moments just as much as its comic ones, and although we desperately want Harley to get a happy ending, we’re not all that sure she will. There’s just one episode left to go in the current season, and we’ve got everything crossed that things go the right way for our girl Harley.
HARLEY QUINN continues on E4 on Mondays and is available via ALL4, Amazon, and Apple thereafter.
