Demi Adejuyigbe is one of the break-out stars from the LA based comedy streaming service Dropout.TV. His previous show Demi Adejuyigbe Is Going To Do One (1) Backflip was a collection of skits and bits that explored the need to show-off. Be it for self-esteem reasons or to impress other people. It was a show about figuring out how much of yourself you were willing to surrender to other people. It has been wildly successful and shot Adejuyigbe into the public eye.
Demi Adejuyigbe Sells Out is the difficult follow-up album after the smash hit. And it enters this space with brutal honesty, eyes open wide, and is worthy successor to the previous show. With added corporate sponsorship. Well not really, it’s mostly an excuse to keep returning to other jokes and observations. The core theme, much like Backflip is that terrible decisions can be hilarious, especially when they seem to make sense at the time.
The dumb gags lean into other dumb gags, stacking silliness on top of silliness so just when you’ve gotten over the first couple of jokes, the next bit comes up and you’re still laughing. Brilliantly done. This also makes up for the rather bumpy theme; what is selling out really? Is the pursuit of money the antithesis of the Fringe Spirit? Should the arts exist in a vacuum? These are silly questions and they aren’t answered here, instead we get very clever jokes, many of which have nothing to do with selling out and are mostly about making your ribs hurt with the laughing.
They are no acrobatics in this show, but they are plenty of other surprises, and call-backs that are simply a joy.
That said, this is genuinely a show about selling out, but mostly it’s about finding peace within performance. Mostly it’s about making the audience consistently laugh in a way that makes it hard to breathe.
Well worth going to see if you can get a ticket; turns out there’s truth in advertising and when you call your show ‘Sells Out’ sales do very well. Simply fabulous.
