PUBLISHER: WIZKIDS | RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 18TH
Wizkid’s DeepCuts range are a set of unpainted (but primed) models suitable for table top gaming and hobbyists. The Royal Court set is a mix of scenery and models intended to be used in courtly games. Though really this is more of a set of useful generic fantasy pieces.
We get two thrones, a dais, a lection, table, things to go on the table and a book. We also get two translucent braziers and two ‘bases’ for braziers that have an integral LED. The bases are a neat gimmick; you can illuminate any translucent model you care to. All these pieces paint up quite nicely, though the braziers are a little fiddly. We advise covering the LED hole when prepping the pieces. These are all nicely generic, suitable for a dungeon tomb, church or feast. The roast pig piece is especially fun to paint.
We also get thirteen courtiers, kings, queens, knights, nobles, squires and so on. There’s a nice mix of styles and people here and all the models are finely detailed. They require minimum preparation. They are also suitable for inexperienced hands though if you’ve got any level of painting skill you’ll find these fun to do as there’s just enough detail to make interesting.
Overall this is an interesting set with some limited uses. The LED bases for the braziers are a neat gimmick and a place to start when using lighting in model displays. The Royal Court set will be more useful as the start of a bigger modelling project than gaming accessory for most of us, though once completed a strong addition to any games master’s arsenal.
