M.R. James’ classic ghost story, Casting the Runes, has been adapted many times, mostly because not only is it very good, but the story is quite elegant in its simplicity. It’s essentially a murder mystery in which the supernatural is the murder weapon, with a befuddled academic as the main protagonist.
The excellent Box Tale Soup’s take on the story uses lighting, performance, puppets and a little prestidigitation to present this creepy story in a very tight sixty minutes. Noel Byrne takes on the role of Edward Dunning, an expert on esoteric matters and parapsychology who has spent their career dismissing the existence of the occult. His job attracts a lot of strange folks, and one is a Mr Karswell, a self-styled alchemist and magus who seeks Dunning’s academic approval.
Antonia Christophers is Ms Harrington, a young lady who is convinced that, despite the evidence, Karswell somehow caused the mysterious circumstances that led to her brother’s death. Everyone else is played by puppets, but not in a ‘Muppet Treasure Island’ sort of way. Both actors use puppets when they’re not performing their central roles, so our focus stays on the main characters.
The puppets are splendidly done and surprisingly sympathetic. From the gossipy librarian to the keen assistant, each one is brought to life by Box Tale Soup’s production skills. The sinister Karswell is especially fun, evoking classic horror tropes through their simple pale and cloaked design.
This take on Casting The Runes has a very classic British horror vibe to it. Byrne’s performance as a man whose world is challenged by the existence of something outside their understanding is perfectly paced, and Christopher’s take on the steadfast and courageous Harrington is measured and powerful.
Box Tale Soup breathe life into this great ghost story, and it’s a delight to see. Mesmerising and memorable, this is a must for horror fans.
