Beware! Something hops in the night. It is Bunnicula, a be-fanged bunny that sucks vegetables dry. Welcome to the very silly world of Bunnicula, where plucky animals solve silly mysteries and deal with supernatural threats. Well, they deal with threats. Sort of.
Bunnicula – Beware The Hare brings together the first two books of the cult smash Bunnicula series, which first came out in 1979. This new edition features a shiny red cover and an ominous looking rabbit. A drop of blood (or is it tomato juice?) drips from one of it’s fangs. Spooky stuff.
As to the stories themselves, well, we get the original Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery and it’s sequel, Howliday Inn. Despite the name, the heroes of this piece are Chester the Cat and the wise old Harold the Dog. Like any classic horror story, the vampiric hare is always shrouded in mystery. This is a very silly children’s tale and despite being over forty years old, it shows no sign of losing it’s appeal. It’s almost as if it’s got some sort of supernatural immortality.
The second story is just as silly and has the same sense of mystery. They’re fun, light-hearted and suitable for pretty much anyone, even youngsters who need to sleep with a night-light on.
Bunnicula – Beware The Hare is perfect Halloween fun. Silly, a little spooky and mostly for kids, but not too sweet. It’s a treat, not a trick. It’s a good way to introduce people to the classic series and well worth picking up, either as a stocking filler or as a way to get a young vampire hunter reading.
