PLATFORM: PC | RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW
In Shit City, the only law is crime. With four gangs patrolling the city under the watchful eye of an all-seeing overlord, it seems like everyone’s up to no good. When Anger Foot’s prized set of limited edition sneakers are stolen from him, he goes on a rampage across the city, wiping out every gang member in sight and stopping at nothing to retrieve his precious kicks.
From the developer of Broforce, Anger Foot is best described as a cross between classic Doom and cult favourite Sludge Life by way of the John Wick movies. Each of the 60+ levels are fairly short but they’re packed with pounding music and fast-paced action that keep you on your toes the whole way through. Your main method of offence is simply kicking seven shades of you know what out of anything that stands in your way (including humanoid crocodiles, mice and goats, along with all kinds of other quirky monstrosities with a variety of unique attacks), you’ll also pick up guns dropped by defeated enemies to add a bit of extra firepower. You’re able to kill most enemies with a single shot, but Anger Foot isn’t much more durable himself – unless you use the accessibility options to make things a bit easier, just a handful of shots will be enough to send you back to the start of the level to try again, so each level is a mad dash to reach the exit as quickly as possible.
Completing challenges within each level rewards you with stars, five of which will unlock a new pair of shoes. You’re able to equip a single pair of sneaks at the start of a level, with each one giving Anger Foot a specific ability – doors explode when they’re kicked open, enemies’ brains swell to a gigantic size to make headshots easier, acquiring ammo when kicking enemies, that sort of thing. All of the 20+ pairs of shoes are useful in their own ways, giving plenty of ways to change things up a bit and add a bit of variety to the way you tackle each level.
The occasional bit of downtime allows you to explore your surroundings and talk to NPCs who are usually either up to no good, amusingly depressed, or just plain weird. There are plenty of visual gags spread around the place too, and the slightly unhinged art style will burn its way into your memory, lending itself well to the demented atmosphere. You’re likely to reach the final level in around 6 hours, although completionists will get a few more hours out of trying to beat all of the challenges, some of which are almost obnoxiously tricky. Great fun for those with a fondness for fast-paced demented weirdness!
