DVD REVIEW: ALPHA AND OMEGA: THE LEGEND OF THE SAW TOOTHED CAVE / CERT: U / DIRECTOR: RICHARD RICH / SCREENPLAY: TOM KANE / STARRING: BEN DISKIN, KATE HIGGINS, DEE DEE GREENE, G.K. BOWES / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

Lionsgate and Crest Animation have spawned another straight-to-DVD addition to the bloated Alpha and Omega franchise. With each sequential release held together only by the same characters, The Legend of the Saw Toothed Cave follows last year’s A Howl-iday Adventure and the Winter Olympics-themed Great Wolf Games earlier this year.

Since the first mediocre instalment, the voice acting has taken a violent nosedive. The 2010 title boasting Dennis Hopper and Christina Ricci among its cast, the fourth, however, is pretty poor all round with video game voiceover actress G.K. Bowes being the best of a bad bunch.

Though it’s up to the same quality animation-wise as its predecessors, The Legend of the Saw Toothed Cave still sports the remarkably unfunny jokes and slapstick gags that end up being downright annoying rather than rib-tickling. Still, it’s one to keep the little ones quiet for forty-odd minutes.

However, the story does get a whole lot more interesting when blind wolf Daria reveals her plight. At its heart, it’s a story of segregation and family bonds with a splash of Darwinism thrown in, if thinly spread. Gimmicky at best, and with a fifth instalment set for 2015, the Alpha and Omega series isn’t quite in its death throes yet.
