Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, best known for being one of the founding members of The Roots, will make his feature film directing debut with a live-action/hybrid reimagining of Disney’s The Aristocats, Deadline reports.

Questlove first made the jump to directing with the fantastic, Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. With The Aristocats, the six-time Grammy winner will direct, executive produce, and oversee music for the film.

The script hails from Will Gluck (Easy A, Annie, Peter Rabbit) and Keith Bunin (Onward, Horns), based on the 1970 animated flick about a family of Parisian cats who learn they’ll inherit a fortune from their elderly owner. But when the owner’s butler catnaps them and abandons them outside the city, these fancy felines must team up with a street-smart tomcat if they are to find their way home.

So far, there’s no other information on how closely this film will stick to the Walt Disney original, on who may be joining the live-action cast, nor on when production might begin on the project. But with as solid a team behind the camera as this is shaping up to be, we’re looking forward to finding out more.
