Cult comedy The Prisoner of Zenda – starring Peter Sellers in 3 roles – is heading to DVD from Fabulous Films.

Based on the classic Anthony Hope novel, this 1979 film is an irreverent take on the much-filmed text, which didn’t go down as well as one would hope – particularly with Sellers, who was quoted as saying “Do not watch this!” A remark that lost him a 3-picture deal with producer Walter Mirisch.

It does, however, boast a screenplay by top comedy writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (creators of Porridge and The Likely Lads) and a score by the legendary Henry Mancini (The Pink Panther).

Synopsis: After the King of Ruritania dies in a hot air balloon accident, his eldest son is kidnapped by the evil prince Michael, his younger brother, who hopes to snatch the throne. To foil these dastardly plans, a stand-in is needed for the impending coronation. But will the London cabbie lookalike they’ve chosen be up to the task?

Joining Sellers in the film is his then-wife, Lynne Frederick, plus famous faces such as Lionel Jeffries (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), Elke Sommer (Lisa and the Devil), Gregory Sierra (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Jeremy Kemp (Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors), and Catherine Schell (Space: 1999).

The Prisoner of Zenda is released on December 5th and can be pre-ordered here.
