With Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse on the way next year, the film’s official synopsis has now been revealed and gives us an idea of what to expect from this latest entry in the X-Men movie franchise.

The official word on the film reads:

Since the dawn of civilisation, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hands in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy), must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Quite heavy stuff, no? It’s certainly interesting to see that Magneto is aligned with Apocalypse and that it will be Raven/Mystique helping to lead the X-Men in their mission.

In terms of the huge cast involved, Singer’s latest X-movie will feature the aforementioned Fassbender, Lawrence and McAvoy, plus Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Rose Byrne as Moira McTaggert, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Lucas Till as Havok, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Ben Hardy as Angel, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Lana Condor as Jubilee, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, and then Oscar Isaac as the titular Apocalypse. There are also rumours that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine could very well make an appearance at some point too.

Planned as the final part of a trilogy which began with X-Men: First Class and progressed with X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse is currently set for a May 27th, 2016 release.
