Netflix Renews CASTLEVANIA for a Second Season

With Netflix having now debuted the first season of its animated Castlevania series, the on-demand streaming service has moved to already confirm a second season for the show. Whilst the initial season is made up of just four episodes, the second year will be bumped up to an eight-episode run.

On this news, Fred Seibert, CCO of WOW! Unlimited Media and CEO of Frederator Networks, said, “Castlevania has been a world icon for 30 years. WOW! And Frederator are honoured to have the privilege of bringing it to life as an entertainment series that will continue its story for years to come.”

In terms of the cast, the animated Castlevania has quite the impressive vocal ensemble, with Graham McTavish as Dracula, Richard Armitage as Trevor Belmont, James Callias as Alucard, Emily Swallow as Lisa, Matt Fewer as The Bishop, Tony Amendola as The Elder, and Alejandro Reynoso as Sypha Belnades.

The official blurb on the series reads:

Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself.

Lionsgate Close to Landing HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN

With a Hellboy reboot announced back in May, it now appears that the return of Big Red has managed to find a home.

Via Splash Report, Lionsgate is in final negotiations to take on Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. If you remember back, this rejig has genre fave Neil Marshall on board to direct, with Stranger Things’ David Harbour taking on the titular role this time out.

As a comic book character, Hellboy debuted back in 1993. A demon drawn from Hell by crazy Nazi types during the closing moments of World War II, he’d end up becoming a part of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense and raised by Prof. Trevor Bruttenolm. Throughout his years in action, Hellboy has battled (and usually bested!) countless eerie demons and evil doers, often with the help of the likes of Abe Sapien and Lobster Johnson.

In terms of big screen shenanigans, Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy was released in 2004 and took home just under $100 million worldwide as it won a whole heap of praise from many quarters. The 2008 follow-up, Hellboy: The Golden Army, topped that by taking $160 million from a budget of $85 million. And since that 2008 picture, fans and critics alike have been hoping to finally see the third leg of del Toro and Perlman’s trilogy. As it stands, that now won’t be happening, which is hugely disappointing to hear but, if we’re honest, it’s something we’ve all been expecting. That said, Neil Marshall has proven his salt over the years with efforts such as Dog SoldiersThe DescentDoomsday and more recently with his work in TV on the likes of Constantine and Westworld. As for Harbour, he’s seen his star rise thanks to his excellent turn in the first season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. It may not be del Toro, it may not be Perlman, but there’s certainly enough talent involved here to make this new take on a beloved hero work.

Release Date Set for THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS

Earlier this year, we brought word that Brian Henson’s R-rated puppet thriller The Happytime Murders was in development. And now comes a confirmed release date for what promises to be one of the most unique movies of the year.

All is still a little hush-hush when it comes to the cast of the picture, but we do know that The Happytime Murders has now been booked in for an August 17th release – meaning the film will hit the big screen in just over two months.

Previously, we’d heard that Melissa McCarthy will headline and also produce, and there were some initial stories that Jamie Foxx was in talks to co-star with the Ghostbusters actress. Other than McCarthy, though, cast details have yet to be revealed.

Plot-wise, the movie takes place in a world where humans and puppets coexist, although the puppets are looked at by many as second-class citizens. When the cast of 1980s kids show “The Happytime Gang” wind up dead, a grizzled and disgraced LAPD detective puppet ends up teaming with his human former partner to try and get to the bottom of this mystery.

Two More Join Season 2 of MARVEL’S LUKE CAGE

With Mike Colter’s Power Man getting set to join the rest of Marvel’s ‘street level’ heroes in The Defenders later this year, now comes news on some casting additions for the second season of Marvel’s Luke Cage.

As announced by Marvel Television and Netflix, The Night Of’s Mustafa Shakir and Rosewood’s Gabrielle Dennis have been brought in for Season 2 of Cage’s solo show. Shakir will be playing John McIver, a character described as “a natural leader, brimming with charisma, whose mission is focused on Harlem and vengeance.” As for Dennis, her role is that of Tilda Johnson, “a brilliant, holistic doctor with a complicated history in Harlem where, as much as she tries to stay far from trouble, it seems to always find her.”

On these additions, Marvel’s Jeph Loeb said, “Mustafa’s incredible presence and power ignited us from our first meeting, and Gabrielle brings the charm and smarts to be a very complicated role. Both will be wonderful additions to our already magnificent cast.”

Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker enthused, “I can’t wait for audiences to see the compelling paces we put both Mustafa and Gabrielle through. From the moment you see each of them on screen, I feel they will be powerful additions to the world of Marvel and Harlem’s Luke Cage.”

As well as Colter returning as the titular Cage, also confirmed to be returning are Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, and Theo Rossi as Shades.

The current plan calls for Season 2 of Marvel’s Luke Cage to land on Netflix at a to-be-confirmed 2018 date, whilst Cage will be front-and-centre when he joins Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist in Marvel’s The Defenders, which debuts on August 18th.

We’ve had a tremendous time at the last couple of Expos, and to say we’re massively looking forward to this would be an understatement. Developers from System 3 Software (The Last Ninja, Myth, Putty, Ferrari Challenge) will be in attendance, along with industry legend Jim Bagley, and former Ocean Software director Gary Bracey – he’s the chap responsible for securing movie licenses, so he’s sure to have a few interesting anecdotes to share. Big Boy Barry from Games World (Sky One’s mid-90’s answer to Gamesmaster) will also be dropping by to take part in a Q&A, as well as hosting some tournaments over the weekend.

We’re going to have to bullet point the rest of the activities, otherwise, we’ll be here all day. Check this lot out!

Downey Jr. Discusses his IRON MAN Future

Since the first Iron Man movie kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008, there have been several points where there was talk of Robert Downey Jr. finishing up as ol’ Shellhead. And now, the actor himself has been discussing the possibility of him leaving the Armored Avenger behind.

Speaking to News Corp Australia, RDJ explained, “I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [MCU movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.”

He continued, “It’s this cynical thing. I could have said when the first Avengers came out: ‘It’s not going to get any better than that. Everybody stop!’ But to me it’s always about people and opportunities, like the Russos, who I adore.”

To date, Downey Jr as Stark has appeared in three Iron Man pictures, two Avengers efforts, butted heads with the Sentinel of Liberty in Captain America: Civil War, is soon to be seen mentoring Tom Holland’s Wall-crawler in this week’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and even had a brief cameo in a post-credits scene for The Incredible Hulk. Previously, there was talk of the actor being done as Iron Man following Iron Man 3, then there was talk that Avengers: Age of Ultron would be his swansong, and then the same applied to Civil War.

When Downey Jr.’s time as Iron Man will come to an end is still up in the air right now, although he’s already confirmed for May 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and its May 2019 to-be-titled follow-up. Given that it’s already been said how that fourth Avengers effort will be the last appearance of certain members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it seems like that may be the perfect time to write Stark out of the MCU if all parties decide upon having Iron Man step out of the spotlight.

GAME OF THRONES’ Final Season to be Feature-Length Episodes?

As Game of Thrones gets set to return for its seventh season later this month, word has come out that the eighth season may well be made up of more feature-length episodes.

Via Vanity Fair, this past weekend’s Con of Thrones event saw sound designer Paula Fairfield reveal that, whilst Season 8 will be made up of just six episodes, the final season of Thrones will be made up of outings that clock in at 80-plus minutes.

Fairfield confirmed that this month’s seventh season will be the usual hour-a-piece episodes for the seven-episode season – bar the season finale, which has a run time of 82 minutes.

With anticipation high, Game of Thrones return to screens on July 16th.

Mahershala Ali in Talks for TRUE DETECTIVE

Whilst a deal has yet to be agreed, Mahershala Ali is currently in negotiations to headline a third season of HBO’s True Detective.

As well as winning an Oscar for his stunning performance in Moonlight, Ali will also be familiar to genre fans for his mesmerising presence in the Netflix-exclusive Marvel’s Luke Cage. The Wrap reports that he’s in extremely early talks with HBO, and there’s no deal in place just yet. In fact, a third season hasn’t even been given the official go-ahead by the network just yet, although tentative plans for a new season have been in place for a while now.

The last we’d heard on True Detective was back in January when creator Nic Pizzolatto was joined by David Milch to start developing a Season 3.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.

DEEP BLUE SEA Sequel Currently Shooting

Given how we’re a sucker for a good (or bad!) shark movie, we’re pretty stoked to hear that a Deep Blue Sea sequel is actually shooting right now.

Courtesy of MovieHole, after seemingly spending years floating in development hell, a sequel to Renny Harlin’s 1999 picture is currently in production and shooting over in Cape Town, South Africa.

A sequel to Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea was first announced back in 2009, but that idea seemed to slowly sink to the bottom of the ocean as the years went on. Now, following the success of the likes of The Shallows and 47 Meters Down, Deep Blue Sea 2 is finally happening.

In terms of details, Tales From the Hood’s Darin Scott is on board, with Michael Beach – recently announced to feature in Aquaman – set to star. Sadly, Thomas Jane or LL Cool J won’t be reprising their roles from the first film, and this production is actually being developed as a TV movie for the SyFy channel.

The early plot details follow Dr. Klaus Van Etten as he experiments on bull sharks despite a bunch of marine experts telling him that this is totally, totally a bad idea. From there, things obviously take a turn for the worst and the sharks begin to cause all kinds of chaos and carnage.

If you remember, the original Deep Blue Sea centered on a bunch of mako sharks experimented on by Saffron Burrows and her team. The plan was to experiment on the sharks in order to try and find a cure for Alzheimer’s, but instead the sharks became super intelligent and began turning the tide on the likes of Burrows, Stellan Skarsgard, Michael Rappaport, and Samuel L. Jackson.

As ever, expect more on Deep Blue Sea 2 as we get it.
