New HELLBOY Nearly Continued from Del Toro’s Movies

After years of hoping for the third leg of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy trilogy to come to light, those hopes were completely dashed when it was announced earlier this year that the property is being completely rebooted. Now, creator Mike Mignola has moved to discuss how this new movie so nearly followed on from the previous two Ron Perlman-starring efforts.

Speaking to Nerdist, Mignola explained, “We originally started trying to tie it to the del Toro universe and continue those movies. But once we had Neil Marshall, we thought, ‘Why are we going to try and continue that universe?’ Because a del Toro movie is a del Toro movie, and you don’t want to try and hand a del Toro movie to someone else. Especially someone as great as Neil Marshall. So that’s when it went from being this continuation to being a reboot. It’s exciting to have another director. It’s exciting to take another path, to take that material and give it another leaning.”

As well as del Toro replaced by The Descent’s Marshall, star Ron Perlman is another who won’t be returning, with Stranger Things’ David Harbour taking over as Big Red. And as Mignola explains, the new Hellboy is getting a tad giddy about the gig. “He is super excited about being Hellboy and he wants to make sure he gets it right. He’s texting me Hellboy questions about his history, about what the character would think about this or about that. It’s really exciting to be back and see this thing come together.”

Starting a fresh with the franchise, this new movie is titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. And as ever, expect more on this hugely intriguing picture as we get it.

Rachel Crow in BUMBLEBEE Talks

Following the news earlier this week that Jorge Lendeborg Jr. has joined the upcoming Bumblebee picture, now comes word on another potential new addition for the Transformers spinoff.

As per Tracking Board, Deidra & Laney Rob a Train’s Rachel Crow is in talks for a key role in the film. If she does indeed end up signed on for Bumblebee, she’ll join Lendeborg Jr. and True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld.

No major details are known about Bumblebee at this stage bar the fact that it will centre on the fan favourite Autobot who has been a longstanding part of Michael Bay’s Transformers movies. Additionally, the early word suggests that the film will take place in the 1980s.

At present, Bumblebee is booked in for a June 8th, 2018 release.

David Ayer Departs SCARFACE Remake

The upcoming Scarface redo has run in to some problems, with director David Ayer having this week departed the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Suicide Squad director has partied ways with Universal due to his script being too dark for what the studio was looking for. Given the often grim nature of the Scarface tale, logic would rationalise that you needed some sort of darkness involved. Regardless, Ayer’s vision reportedly had too much darkness for the powers that be. And before Ayer’s involvement, of course, Antoine Fuqua was attached to direct before he had to shoot off to get cracking on a sequel to The Equalizer.

In some good news for the redo, Rogue One’s Diego Luna is still on board to headline this new Scarface. Now, though, the focus is clearly on finding yet another new director.

Scarface was originally a 1932 movie from Howard Hawks, telling the story of an Irish immigrant rising to power in Chicago’s gangster-driven landscape. In 1983, Al Pacino famously starred in Brian De Palma’s Scarface, taking the original tale and changing it up for a 1980s Miami setting and focussing on a Cuban refugee. In this upcoming picture, the current word is that the film will have a West Coast Latino setting.

Up next for Ayer is the female-driven Gotham City Sirens, with the only confirmed cast member for that being Margot Robbie reprising her Harley Quinn role.

Expect to hear more on this latest Scarface remake as and when we get it.

Elongated Man Heading to THE FLASH

Given the several mentions of him towards the end of The Flash’s third season, it came as no real surprise to hear that The Thinker will be the ‘big bad’ of Season 4. And now comes word on another familiar DC character who’ll be debuting when The CW’s Scarlet Speedster-centric series returns to the small screen later this year.

As per ThatHashtagShow, Team Flash appear to be getting a new addition in the form of none other than Ralph Dibny, aka Elongated Man. For the eagle-eyed of you out there, you’ll remember that Dibny was actually namedropped way back in The Flash’s first season, when he was listed as one of the fourteen people who died as a result of the particle accelerator explosion.

The casting call for the Ralph Dibny gig reads: Male, mid to late 30s, open ethnicity. Think Ryan Reynolds or Chris Pratt, Ralph has the ability to stretch his body to super-human lengths and size… however, while resculpting his old body is easy to do, Dibny finds losing the old misguided sense of truth and slobbery, even after joining the team at S.T.A.R. Labs, is a far more difficult task to accomplish. MAJOR RECURRING GUEST STAR WITH A SERIES REGULAR OPTION FOR NEXT SEASON.

As mentioned, the main villain of the new season will be Clifford Devoe, aka Thinker, and the casting call for that role reads: Male, 40s – 50, open ethnicity. After being struck with dark matter from the particle accelerator explosion, Clifford Devoe became a meta-human with a mega-mind. A Stephen Hawking-esque genius who’s devised an intricate plan to fix all that he deems wrong with humanity. The Thinker will embark upon a season long battle with The Flash that pins the fastest man alive against the fastest mind alive. FRACTIONAL ONE SEASON SERIES REGULAR.

It also appears that The Thinker won’t be alone in his battle against the Sultan of Speed, with a casting call gone out for a female henchman called The Mechanic. That call reads: Female, 30s – 40, diverse. A highly intelligent engineer who designs and assembles a plethora of devices for the ailing Clifford Devoe. Devoe’s right hand, she’s the truest of true-believers who’ll stop at nothing to implement his plan to fix all that’s wrong with humanity – even if she loses who she is in the process. MAJOR RECURRING GUEST STAR.

Where The Mechanic is concerned, that’s a character who doesn’t have any direct comic book counterpart, but there are certainly trademarks in there of certain established names. Of course, it is worth nothing that both Elongated Man and The Mechanic have yet to be officially confirmed by The CW or the minds behind the show. However, with Comic-Con beginning next week, it could well be that we hear something more formal over the next few weeks.

The Flash returns for its fourth season on October 10th in the US, with a UK return expected to follow shortly after.

Leah Gibson Joins MARVEL’S JESSICA JONES

With Kristen Ritter’s Jessica Jones getting set to return to Netflix as part of The Defenders later this year, the Alias ace’s solo show has brought in a new addition for its second season.

As per Variety, Leah Gibson has joined the show as Ingrid, a role described as a street-wise woman trained as a nurse. Genre fans will likely be familiar with Gibson for her roles in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and briefly in Watchmen. Interestingly, a leaked report back in April had the same character listed and had many speculating that “Ingrid” could well end up being the nefarious Typhoid Mary; a comic book character who has dissociative identity disorder, telekinesis-esque psionic powers, and who has been featured as a hired assassin at times.

The only other new additions for Marvel’s Jessica Jones so far is Oscar-nommed Janet McTeer in a mystery role that is said will have a huge impact on the titular Jones. As for Jessica herself, as alluded to, she’ll be joining Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist when Marvel’s The Defenders lands on Netflix on August 18th.

Matt Reeves “Starting Again” with THE BATMAN’s Script

With Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes now in UK cinemas, the director’s attention is now fully on his next project: The Batman. In an interesting new twist, though, Reeves has revealed that he’s getting set to start from scratch on the story of that movie.

Previously, a screenplay had been put together by Ben Affleck and DC’s Geoff Johns, with Affleck’s Caped Crusader to battle Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke in a movie that at one point had Affleck on directing duties. As the workload became too much, Affleck dropped the directing gig, and now Matt Reeves is the one tasked with helming the first cinematic solo outing for Batfleck.

On the script for the film, Reeves told MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, “It’s a new story. We’re starting again.” He would elaborate a little further to Uproxx, explaining, “I can fail for every single reason because of myself. I don’t want to fail because of something that I don’t believe in in the first place – because I’m not going to know how to do it. I can respect that somebody else might know exactly how to do it. Like there are plenty of things that I’m not the right director for and I love to go see those movies. I love to see what people can do. But I can only do what I can do, and so I have to work from that perspective for self-preservation. It’s not out of any kind of like, ‘My way or the highway!’ It’s because that’s the way I have to do it for me to feel confident in my choices.”

In fairness, you can easily see Reeves’ point; if you’re tasked with directing a film whose story you’re not happy with then you’re going to be facing an uphill battle to get fully invested in the job. Still, this doesn’t bode too well for Warner Brothers and The Batman, as obviously starting again on the script will push things back a little in terms of getting cameras rolling.

Adding to this, the notion of restarting the script and story means that pretty much all bets are off. As in, maybe Deathstroke might be scrapped as the villain of the piece, or it could even be that Affleck himself may choose not to return to the cape and cowl after this November’s Justice League.

As ever, expect more on The Batman as it continues to develop.

Christopher Nolan Keen to Direct a BOND Movie

With reports this week claiming that Daniel Craig has indeed agreed to return as 007, Christopher Nolan has now been talking about how he’d love to direct a James Bond picture at some point in the future.

Speaking to Playboy and the idea, Nolan enthused, “A Bond movie, definitely. I’ve spoke to the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson over the years. I deeply love the character, and I’m always excited to see what they do with it. Maybe one day that would work out. You’d have to be needed, if you know what I mean. It has to need reinvention; it has to need you. And they’re getting along very well.”

Many have long championed the MementoInception and The Dark Knight trilogy helmer as a perfect fit to tackle Britain’s greatest spy over the past decade or so, and those same fans will be extremely encouraged to see Nolan speak so fondly of Bond. Whether anything more comes from this down the line, we’ll have to wait and see.

Up next for Nolan is Dunkirk, in UK cinemas from July 21st.

Our Guide to Greater Manchester Fringe 2017

Everybody knows that Edinburgh hosts the world’s largest Fringe Festival in August, but that means that lots of other cities host smaller festivals the month before. Manchester, of course, tends to get all the good stuff first. The Greater Manchester Fringe is back this July, now in its third year. Let’s take a look at some of the cult entertainment style shows on offer in 2017. And whilst you’re out in the city of Manchester to look at some shows, you may also want to grab a drink or two at local bars such as The Fab Café or The Tiger Lounge before heading off to your venue.

The Dead, Live! – Scytheplays Ltd, July 18th, TriBeca
Scytheplays can be relied on to deliver the chills. Their previous works tend to satisfy that niche interest,  involving scary stories, sci-fi weirdness or simply retro-chic. The Dead, Live! is a clever stab at the ‘pyschic’ entertainment industry. It focuses on a chap called Lawrence Dodds, a popular ‘psychic’ medium who knows he’s a fake, but the world of Spirit may have some shocks in store for him when someone unexpected attends one of his live shows.

Porky The Poet & Achtung!/Acting – Phil Jupitus, July 13th & 14th, Kings Arms
TV comedian, Beano reader and occasional Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band member Phil Jupitus adopts an alternate persona for a surreal and odd journey into his psyche.

The Magnificent Captain Moth – Ultramarine Theatre, July 15th & 16th, 22nd to 25th, 53two
What are superheroes for if they aren’t for helping us face our fears?  When Lucy’s dreams are disturbed by danger in the darkness, out comes the Magnificent Captain Moth, to save the day. But why is he afraid of the dark? Will Lucy abandon the safety of her duvet to help a hero in trouble?

Christopher Bowles Live in Technicolour – Magpie Man Theatre, July 17th & 18th, Studio One
Christopher Bowles can be relied on to deliver insightful, terrifying and incredibly clever dialogue in a one-man performance from the award winning playwright. Expect to experience a full spectrum of emotions and oddness.

starke.florida: the final hours of Ted Bundy – Pact Productions,  July 20th to 22nd, The Vaults.
Sunrise in the small town of Starke, hours before his execution, serial killer Ted Bundy requests a meeting with Florida detective Howard Stacker, a man who has spent the closing years of his service hunting down this demon. Expect tense drama.

The Lion, The Witch and the WardrobeSalford Arts Theatre’s Young Performers Company,  July 20th & 21st, Salford Arts
CS Lewis’s classic novel, performed by children for children and the young at heart. We can’t wait to see the Lion.

Conspiracy Theory: A Lizard’s TaleHalf Rice/Half Chips, July 23rd, 28th & 30th, 53two
One man’s journey into the world of lizards and denial, the truth may be out there, but it’s probably nowhere near the characters in this cracking bit of fringe theatre.

Clonely Jasmine Chatfield & Charlie Hammond, July 25th & 26th, Studio 1
Clonely is the sort of show that brings us to the GM Fringe. It’s an adventure in existential sci-fi crisis and a blend of absurd theatre with sci-fi cinema with DIY props. Expect lo-fi aesthetics, an awkward five minute docking scene, and long monologues about how dark and bleak space life is.  Sounds great to us.

Super Hamlet 64: Parody DLC – Edward Day, July 24th to 26th, Kings Arms
An ocarina, a ukulele and a thirst for revenge. And a metric tonne of videogame nostalgia. Expect Shakespeare shoved into an 8bit world with plenty of liberties with the text. We expect local critics to hate it and fans to love it.

Planet Caravan – People Zoo Productions, July 28th & 29th, Oldham Library
Modestly subtitled the “The GREATEST tour of the Universe in the Universe!”, this family show  features an intergalactic adventure, original songs and, of course, a caravan

You can find out more about Manchester’s own version of a fringe festival at the GM Fringe Website.

Charlize Theron Keen for FURIOSA Return

Ever since Mad Max: Fury Road roared to the big screen in 2015, there’s been constant talk of sequels, prequels, and potential spinoffs. One such mooted project was a picture focussing on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, and now the actress herself has been discussing the possibility of that happening.

Speaking to Variety, Theron enthused, “I’d love to. There were three scripts. They were written as backstories to Max’s character and to Furiosa’s character. But at the end of the day, this thing lives and breathes with George. I think Warner Brothers knows that. We are all waiting for him to show us the way.”

Of course, the George she’s referring to is franchise creator and director George Miller. Previously, there were reports of three further Mad Max movies being lined up, with Mad Max: The Wasteland initially announced by Miller. All has gone a tad quiet on the Max front in recent months, though, but at least we know that Theron is still keen to get going on Furiosa should that film finally start to move forward.

As ever, expect more on this if and when it develops. In the meantime, Charlize Theron can be seen headlining Atomic Blonde later this month.

Quentin Tarantino Working on MANSON FAMILY Movie

After his dabbles with Westerns, Quentin Tarantino is now starting to move forward on his next project – and it’s one that’s set to have a brutal horror edge to it, by all accounts.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, QT’s next movie is to be based around the infamous Manson Family murders. While no names are known for definite at this early stage, it’s believed that Tarantino is already in talks with several A-list talents about joining what should prove to be a unique new take on a truly shocking and sickening event. Early names being mooted are Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence, with the plan to start shooting next summer.

No title has been revealed just yet, although Tarantino has already finished up the screenplay and will indeed be directing, too. Harvey and Bob Weinstein will again work with Quentin to produce the picture, and the current plan is to shop the movie to studios for co-financing and co-distribution purposes in a way similar to Inglourious Basterds.

For those unfamiliar with the real-life Manson Family murders of 1969, that traumatic and tragic event saw Charles Manson initially order a group of his followers to attack a Benedict Canyon, LA residence that he believed was owned by a record producer who had rejected him. In reality, the house was occupied by director Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife, Sharon Tate. Over the space of several hours, the Manson followers would torture and kill Tate and four of her friends.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it.
