Firsts London Gets Geeky with Shakespeare’s First Folio!

folio

Here at STARBURST Towers, it’s fair to say that we receive invitations to a very broad range of publicity events, and some of them make us perplexed as to the connection with sci-fi, fantasy, or horror. But then some of them are so geekily cool that we turn up anyway, to find ourselves pleasantly surprised by the genre links.

Which is how we found ourselves in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe on London’s Southbank very early one recent morning, to learn more about Firsts – London’s Rare Book Fair, coming to Battersea Evolution in South West London from June 7th – 9th. The Globe is the charity partner for the event, which will be launched by Stephen Fry, and will enable book lovers to view, and in some cases get up close and personal with a varied range of rare and out of print books, maps, art and related ephemera. Apparently books are increasingly popular with millennials, who are seemingly managing to put their screens down for long enough to read something other than social media posts.

But the reason we’ve been enticed to The Globe’s indoor space is to view one of the less than 250 extant copies of Shakespeare’s First Folio. This one is owned by a private individual, John Wolfson, and he’s loaned it to Shakespeare’s Globe to exhibit at the event and the volume will eventually, if plans are successful, come fully into The Globe’s possession in due course, as John has indicated his intention to leave the entirety of his rare and antique book collection to The Globe to form a core part of its planned future archive and library.

Many of the remaining copies of the First Folio are in the possession of The Folger in Washington DC, who own at least 80 copies, there are others in University and college libraries globally and there’s a copy in the British Library. But today, John Wolfson’s copy has arrived on the Southbank of the Thames, having been couriered by Pom Harrington, chair of Firsts and one of the senior figures at Peter Harrington Rare Books, whose In Her Own Words exhibit Starburst recently visited.

This is the first time the book has left John Wolfson’s New York apartment in 40 years, and it’s staggering being 9 inches from a book printed in 1623, published by two of Shakespeare’s friends, actors John Heminges and Henry Condell, who have written the introduction at the start of the volume. The folio is in remarkably good condition, although the text of The Tempest looks like it’s been through the ravages created by the storm magicked into existence by Ariel and Prospero themselves. It’s fortunate indeed that The Tempest’s text was printed in the First Folio, as otherwise this drama, sometimes considered to be one of the first works of fantasy in theatre, may have been lost to history. As its story forms the basis for not only the movie Forbidden Planet, but also an early story in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, the world of genre would have been much poorer has it not survived. Macbeth, the dark, twisted and horrific Scottish play many have suffered a similar fate, neither text having been recorded in a solo volume before the printing of the Folio. Pom and The Globe’s staff were generous enough to indulge the whims of Starburst, as we massively geeked-out over this artefact of history, allowing us to view some of the most infamous lines in English literary history in their original publication.

The First Folio forms part of the Shakespeare’s Globe exhibition at Firsts London, and will be accompanied by books containing the texts Shakespeare may have used for inspiration for such plays as Romeo & Juliet, and Twelfth Night. Also, in the exhibition, curated by John Wolfson, will be items from The Globe’s extensive prop collection. The Firsts – London event will also include a virtual reality experience set in 18th Century Paris, and on Sunday June 9th, visitors can bring their own books to the fair to be appraised.

If you want to be in the same room as a lot of old books, and the almost four-hundred-year-old First Folio in particular, then you should check out the event. You’re unlikely to be allowed to touch the Folio – it’s valued at £2million – but other exhibitors will be happy to let you loose through their leaves.

Pom Harrington from Firsts London

Firsts – London’s Rare Book Fair will be open at Battersea Evolution from Friday June 7th to Sunday June 9th. Friday opening hours are Noon to 8pm, Saturday 11am to 7pm, and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Tickets are £20 on Friday, but free on Saturday and Sunday, and a free shuttle bus will run from Sloane Square (District and Circle Lines on the London Underground). The CW Puts in Series Order for BATWOMAN

Ruby Rose Batwoman

In some awesome news that quite frankly isn’t totally unexpected, The CW has put in a full series order for Batwoman.

With Ruby Rose debuting as Kate Kane/Batwoman in last year’s stunning Elseworlds crossover, The CW had put in a pilot order with the hope of taking Batwoman forward as a full series should the pilot whet the appetite of the powers-that-be. And seemingly, said appetite has indeed been whet.

This marks Batwoman as the fifth Arrowverse show, following in the footsteps of Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. Of course, Arrow itself – the show that started this shared Arrowverse realm – is coming to an end late this year following a shorter eighth season.

For those not familiar with Batwoman, she’s a character who’s found herself back in the spotlight again in more recent years, although her origins actually date back to a 1956 debut as Kathy Kane in Detective Comics #233. The Kathy Kane character was a creation of Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff, and soon became synonymous with the Silver Age expansion of Batman’s supporting cast of players.

In more recent years, Batwoman was given a spruce up as part of DC Comics’ New 52 reinvention. Now while The New 52 as a concept was largely flawed and found wanting for a number of reasons, the change to Batwoman was one of the more positive moves to come from the rejig. After seemingly dropping off the face of the Earth, Batwoman was brought back into the fold in that 2006 refresh, reimagined as Kate Kane, a Jewish lesbian with bucket-loads of cash behind her. Inspired by Batman, she decided to use her hefty resources to don the cape and cowl and become one of Gotham City’s protectors.

In addition to the aforementioned Ruby Rose as the titular heroine, Batwoman will also feature Rachel Skarsten as the sinister Alice, Camrus Johnson as tech genius Luke Fox, Meagan Tandy as Kate’s one-time love Sophie Moore, Nicole Kang as Kane’s BFF Mary Hamilton, Dougray Scott as Kate’s father Jacob Kane, Elizabeth Anweis as Kate’s stepmother Catherine.

Batwoman will debut later this year.

Roland Emmerich Developing Sci-fi Epic MOONFALL

Roland Emmerich

With a slew of genre favourites in his back pocket, we now have word on what’s next for director Roland Emmerich.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Emmerich is heading to the stars for his next movie. Titled Moonfall, the sci-fi offering will see a strange force knock the Moon from its orbit and put it on a collision course for Earth. From there, it’s down to a ragtag team to head to the Moon in a desperate attempt to figure out the mystery behind this event and save the very existence of our planet.

Emmerich is co-writing the picture with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen, with the director’s Centropolis Entertainment producing the film. The current plan is for AGC to shop the film around at Cannes, with a budget of $150 million having been mentioned.

Emmerich is likely best known to genre fans for directing offerings such as Universal Soldier, Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and White House Down. So yes, this is clearly someone with a penchant for over-the-top disaster spectacles, which means you can likely expect the same sort of explosive action for Moonfall.

At present, the plan is for Moonfall to begin production early next year.

FX Renews WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS

What We Do in the Shadows

While UK audiences have still yet to see the series, What We Do in the Shadows has now been renewed for a second season.

This news was revealed by FX, who confirmed that a second season of the vamp-tastic comedy offering will premiere in 2020.

On this news, FX’s Nick Grad enthused, “Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi and Paul Simms have more than delivered on the high expectations of Shadows fans by adapting the cult classic for television and building a passionate base of new and returning fans. We also want to thank the rest of the creative team, including Scott Rudin, Garrett Basch and Eli Bush, and the incredible cast and crew for delivering such a fun and original series, and we look forward to working with them all on Season 2.”

Set in Staten Island, What We Do in the Shadows stars Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen and Mark Proksch.

While, as mentioned, UK audiences have yet to see a single episode of the show, that is soon about to change. You see, What We Do in the Shadows is due to start airing on BBC Two from May 19th.

Disney Books in STAR WARS, AVATAR and NEW MUTANTS Release Dates

Star Wars

With the Star Wars franchise taking a bit of a hiatus after this year’s The Rise of Skywalker, now comes a confirmed release date for the next outing to a galaxy far, far away – not to mention a whole host of other Disney pictures.

Where Star Wars is concerned, Disney has set release dates for three new movies. Those films will arrive on December 16th, 2022, December 20th, 2024 and December 18th, 2026. It’s yet to be confirmed, but it’s believed that these three offerings will be the trilogy that Rian Johnson has long been confirmed to be working on.

Elsewhere, Disney has set new releases dates for James Cameron’s four Avatar sequels. Under 20th Century Fox’s watch, the first of these Avatar follow-ups was booked in for December 2020. With Disney having now acquired a whole bunch of Fox properties, the House of Mouse has changed up the release schedule for the Avatar franchise. That now means that Avatar 2 will be released on December 17th, 2021, Avatar 3 on December 22nd, 2023, Avatar 4 on December 19th, 2025 and Avatar 5 on December 17th, 2027.

But that’s not it! No, another Fox-developed movie has similarly seen its release date pushed back. That film is The New Mutants. Keep in mind that this is a picture that was originally set to hit the silver screen back in 2018 before reshoots were ordered and the film was pushed back for a 2019 release. Now though, with those reshoots still yet to take place, Disney has set a new release date of April 3rd, 2020 for The New Mutants. Those planned reshoots were meant to make the movie darker and scarier, although it remains to be seen just if and when they will happen at all.

Now while The New Mutants is one of Fox’s X-Men-driven movies that’s seen its release date shaken up, there’s less fortunate news for Gambit. That long-gestating Channing Tatum-starrer has been completely pulled from the release schedule. Again, this is a film that was originally meant to be released two years ago, yet the movie has seen director after director depart the project. And now, it looks as if time has been called on the picture. Similarly, three other Fox/Marvel movies have been completely scrapped. The focus of these three mystery Marvel offerings was never revealed – many presuming more X-Men movies or even another Fantastic Four effort – but now they will likely never get made.

So, to streamline that down to an easily digestible, does-exactly-as-it-says-on-the-tin timeline, the next few years look a little like this:

April 3rd, 2020: The New Mutants

December 17th, 2021: Avatar 2

December 16th, 2022: Untitled Star Wars Movie

December 22nd, 2023: Avatar 3

December 20th, 2024: Untitled Star Wars Movie

December 19th, 2025: Avatar 4

December 18th, 2026: Untitled Star Wars Movie

December 17th, 2027: Avatar 5

This is all, of course, in addition to plentiful upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that have yet to be given set release dates. Already, we’ve got Spider-Man: Far From Home this July, and then The Eternals, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Panther 2Shang-Chi and Black Widow are just some of the upcoming MCU efforts on the way – and that’s before you explore the possibility of an MCU-set X-Men or FF outing.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it.

Richard Madden in Talks for Marvel’s THE ETERNALS

Richard Madden

With Marvel’s The Eternals slowly beginning to amass its core cast, now comes word on another name who may be heading to the stars to join this upcoming MCU offering.

Courtesy of The Wrap, Richard Madden is in talks to join the film. Madden, of course, is likely best known to genre fans for playing Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, not to mention for his roles in the likes of Bodyguard and Cinderella.

At this early stage, it’s believed that Madden may be up for the role of Ikaris in the picture. That character just so happens to be the leader of the titular Eternals. If Madden does indeed end up signing on for the picture, he’ll join a cast that is headlined by Angelina Jolie as Sersi and that has Train to Busan’s Ma Dong-seok and Silicon Valley’s Kumail Janjiani in unknown roles.

At this stage, details are still sketchy on The Eternals, with – much like so many impending MCU movies – more concrete information expected to be revealed over the next few months now that the landscape-changing Avengers: Endgame has hit the big screen.

Created by the iconic Jack Kirby back in 1976, the Eternals comic book title was based around a race of age-old humans created by the alien Celestials with the plan being for these humans to serve as Earth’s protectors against the nefarious Deviants. The big-screen Eternals will reportedly be based around the Sersi character who is an energy-manipulating being who is pretty much immortal.

With Chloe Zhao on directing duties, expect more on The Eternals as it continues to develop ahead of a rumoured 2020 release.

David S. Goyer Penning HELLRAISER Reboot

Hellraiser

With there having been plentiful rumblings of a proper Hellraiser reboot over the years, now comes a major update on just such a redo.

Courtesy of Variety, David S. Goyer has been brought in by Spyglass Media to pen the screenplay for what has been labelled a “loyal, evolved reimagining” of Hellraiser. Goyer, of course, is no stranger to genre fans, with his writing credits including the likes of the Blade trilogy, Batman Begins, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Constantine TV series.

On this news, Goyer enthused, “I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true.”

This Hellraiser do-over is said to be being fast-tracked for a big-screen release, which will be the first time that Pinhead has been seen on the cinema screen for years now. We’ve had several so-so straight-to-video releases in decades, mind, but fans will surely be chomping at the bit of the prospect of a Hellraiser offering adorning the silver screen once more.

As alluded to, rebooting Hellraiser is something that’s been talked about for an age, with Clive Barker himself even writing a remake at one point in time. Barker famously directed the 1987 movie, which itself was based on his own The Hellbound Heart work.

To date, there has been ten Hellraiser films, although only the first four were released theatrically; the last of those coming in 1996 with Hellraiser: Inferno. The most recent outing for Pinhead and his Cenobites came just last year in the form of the direct-to-video Hellraiser: Judgment. In addition to those features, the franchise has also included further books, comics, and even a video game.

Expect more on this Hellraiser reboot as we get it.

Peter Mayhew 1944 – 2019

Peter Mayhew

In some utterly tragic news, Peter Mayhew has passed away at the age of 74.

Mayhew, of course, is an utter icon of cinema for his duration as Chewbacca in the Star Wars saga.

It has been confirmed by Peter’s family that he passed away on April 30th in his Texas home, with his family by his side.

Much like Peter’s family said, Peter Mayhew put his heart and soul into every single moment he had as Chewbacca. And let’s face it, the world of Star Wars has very few greater characters than Chewie – with so much of that being down to Peter Mayhew.

STARBURST offers its sincerest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Peter.

Rest in peace, sir, and thank you for such glorious memories.

Talks Ongoing for a WILLOW TV Series on Disney+

While news regarding the impending Disney+ streaming service is being dominated by a slew of new Marvel shows being announced for the service, now comes word that an old cult favourite may be being revisited for this upcoming on-demand offering.

Seemingly from out of nowhere, Ron Howard has given indication that Disney+ may find itself housing a Willow sequel series. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (as reported by Variety), Howard said that just such a follow-up series was in “serious discussions” to be developed for Disney+ and that he and Solo screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan were handling the project.

Howard, of course, is the person who directed 1987’s George Lucas-produced Willow in which Warwick Davis starred as the titular Willow Ufgood. On Davis, Howard confirmed that he would indeed be reprising the Willow role before adding, “Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action.”

While no further movies were made past that ’87 favourite, Lucas and the beloved Chris Claremont did team for a trilogy of Willow novels in the ‘90s. In those tales, the action had Elora Danan – the young girl that Willow was protecting in the movie – as the focus of the narrative.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it.

Vincent Cassel Joins WESTWORLD

Vincent Cassel

While we won’t be getting the return of Westworld until next year, that’s not stopped the stunning HBO offering from signing up new cast members for its impending third season. And now, there’s word on another new addition for the genre favourite.

Courtesy of Variety, Vincent Cassel is the latest name to join Westworld. At this stage, however, there are no details on just exactly what role the Mesrine and Black Swan star will have in the series. Cassel joins fellow new additions in the shape of Aaron Paul and Lena Waithe.

Production is currently underway on Season 3 of Westworld. As ever, expect more on the return of this marvellous piece of genre television as it continues to develop.
