NIGHTMARE ALLEY’s Sumptuous Trailer Has Landed

Guillermo del Toro returns with the highly-anticipated Nightmare Alley, which finally has its official trailer.

Though del Toro has been explicit about the fact his latest is neither a horror film nor is it a fantasy, the noir-soaked visual language tells a different story, playing on the suggestion of supernatural elements and looming threat.

In Nightmare Alley, an ambitious young carny (Bradley Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than he is.

The second film adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel assembles an insane cast, including Cooper, Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn, who we first got to see in their stunning period costumes in September.

The newly-released official trailer accomplishes a feat that is nowadays rather rare:  it keeps the thrust of the story very ambiguous, favouring atmosphere over explanations of the narrative. As such, there’s little we know about the plot of del Toro’s newest offering – but there isn’t too much longer to go until we can see for ourselves.

Nightmare Alley will release in cinemas on December 17th, courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. Watch the trailer below:

Murder-Mystery Comedy THE AFTERPARTY Sets Premiere Date

Tiffany Haddish in Apple TV+ series The Afterparty

Star-studded murder-mystery comedy series The Afterparty has just received January 28th, 2022 as its premiere date. The eight-episode first season will launch with three episodes on Apple TV+, followed by a new episode every Friday.

Set at a high school reunion afterparty, the night turns sour when one alum dies gruesomely. Starring an incredible array of comedic talents including Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Illana Glazer, Zoe Chao, Ben Schwartz, Dave Franco, Ike Barinholtz, and more, The Afterparty comes from Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe Award winners Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, 21 Jump Street). Talk about an all-star line up!

Each episode will retell the same fateful night from a different character’s perspective, each “with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller’s personality” (as per Apple’s logline) in what sounds like a fun and unique exercise in genre-blending.

Viral Ghost Story DEAR DAVID Moves To Lionsgate, John McPhail Directing

Dear David, as drawn by Adam Ellis

As per a Deadline exclusive, it seems the supernatural thriller originally set up at New Line, Dear David, has moved to Lionsgate and BuzzFeed.

Based on a true story and one of the first Twitter urban legends, Dear David recounts the story of how former BuzzFeed employee and content creator Adam Ellis became haunted by the ghost of a boy with a misshapen head.

Beginning in 2017 and through hundreds of chilling tweets, Ellis painted an expansive picture of his haunting experiences, complete with photos, videos, and sound recordings of the supposed spectral visits by the dead child, whom Ellis later learned (from a little girl in a dream) was called “Dear David”.

See that? Huge nope. Absolutely not. The whole affair, which developed over many months, amassed its own devout audience and gained Ellis over a million followers. Certainly, the terrifying tale of Dear David was ripe for a big-screen adaptation.

The horror will be directed by John McPhail, best known for his delightful Christmas zombie horror-comedy-musical Anna and the Apocalypsefrom a screenplay by Mike Van Waes. Casting is currently underway, though from what we remember it’s mostly just Adam and his cats being spooked.

Dear David marks Lionsgate and BuzzFeed’s third movie tie-up, following 1UP starring Ruby Rose, and My Fake Boyfriend, starring Keiynan Lonsdale, Dylan Sprouse and Sarah Hyland.

DEEP FEAR Pits Woman Against (A Lot Of) Sharks

Shark from Blake Lively thriller The Shallows

The shark survival thriller subgenre gains another entry today with news that breakout House of Gucci star Mãdãlina Ghenea and Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick have been tapped to star in Deep Fear, from director Marcus Adams (Long Time Dead) and writers Robert Capelli Jr. and Sophia Eptamentis.

Ghenea takes on the role of accomplished yachtswoman Naomi, who embarks on a leisurely, three-day solo trip through the Caribbean and to Grenada to rejoin her boyfriend Jackson (Westwick). When a storm forces Naomi to change course however, she encounters shipwreck survivors who also just so happen to be drug traffickers – and they seem pretty intent on getting their coke back. They force their rescuer to dive into the hull of their sunken vessel to retrieve their shipment (no less than 850 kgs of cocaine). Presumably the sharks get to it first, as the synopsis describes that Naomi encounters “a frenzy of vicious tiger sharks” whom she must outsmart in order to survive.

Madalina Ghenea and Ed Westwick to star in Deep Fear

So not only is our protagonist facing off against narcos, she has not one but multiple apex predators to worry about (Jason Statham could never!). Can’t say that we love those survival odds.

Deep Fear is set to shoot in Malta and the West Indies from January 2022.

In the meantime, Adams had this to say: “This script presents the opportunity to create a truly original context for the genre. The malevolent narcos characters juxtapose acutely with Naomi and Jackson, an earnest and honourable couple who are daring to live their dream of running a yacht chartering business in the West Indies. Essentially ordinary folk thrust into an extraordinary situation, Naomi and Jackson are forced to do combat with both the narcos and one of nature’s most awesome apex predators; creating a three-way battle that elicits tension and fear at every turn.

“Such a dramatic scenario, set within the breath-taking West Indies, facilitates an incredible opportunity to produce stunning photography both above and below the water. Combined with very latest post-production techniques, that will capture the intense threat of the apex predator, I intend to make ‘Deep Fear’ a heart-in-mouth, white knuckle ride.”

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Second Trailer!

Spider-Man: No Way Home poster featuring Doctor Strange

Ah… For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighbourhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Superhero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange, the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

After WandaVision and Loki worked to set up the Marvel multiverse, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be the first feature in the MCU to truly demonstrate the scope and mayhem of the multiverse. Even for a Marvel movie, No Way Home has been the subject of a dizzying number of rumours and fan theories.

Spider-Man: No Way Home green goblin poster

The majority of speculation has centred on just how far down the multiverse rabbit hole the studio would go, a frenetic discourse that was kickstarted by news of Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro‘s entry into MCU canon after each was introduced in a different Spider-Man world. Further casting news have brought Rhys Ifans’ Lizard and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman into the fold, while poster reveals have also teased the return of Green Goblin, with Willem Dafoe hopefully reprising the role.

Obviously, this then convinced many fans that former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would return as variants of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Will theories become reality? It seems we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out…

Without further ado, may we present the brand-new trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home:

Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in UK cinemas December 15th, and in the US on December 17th.

THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME Remake Assembles Eclectic Cast

The Most Dangerous Game remake

Further casting news have emerged regarding Justin Lee’s (The Protector) remake of the 1932 classic horror-thriller The Most Dangerous Game, which originally starred Joel McCrea, Fay Wray and Leslie Banks.

The seminal feature, which inspired such greats as Predator and Zodiac, has assembled quite the cast. It’s now been revealed that two-time Oscar nominee Bruce Dern (who previously worked with Lee on Badland), Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), and Caspar Van Dien (Starship Troopers, Alita: Battle Angel) have joined the production, which already counts Tom Berenger (Platoon) Chris ‘C.T.’ Tamburello (MTV’s The Challenge), Elissa Dowling, Kevin Porter, Eddie Finlay and Randy Charach amongst its cast.

The original film, based on the influential 1924 short story of the same name by Richard Connell, concerned a big game hunter who deliberately stranded a group of luxury yacht passengers on a remote island, so that he could hunt them for sport. The classic gets a father-son remix with this latest production, as the two are washed ashore a mysterious island after their steamership explodes. Their host, Baron Von Wolf, reveals that the island is his gaming preserve. Berenger plays a man who has managed to survive on the island but whose mind is all but gone.

The Most Dangerous Game is currently in production with eyes on a summer 2022 release – probably VOD, right? Deadline also revealed some first look images for the film.

Mads Mikkelsen’s Unhinged Comedy RIDERS OF JUSTICE Gets Remake

Mads Mikkelsen in Riders of Justice

The excellent, darkly funny comedy-thriller Riders of Justice is getting an English-language remake, courtesy of Lionsgate Studios. Yes, we are indeed talking about the film that was only released last year, from writer-director Anders Thomas Jensen and  starring the always-great Mads Mikkelsen. Why a remake so soon, you might ask?

Because Riders of Justice is a Danish-language film that will this time be done in English.

It brings to mind Bong Joon-ho’s quip upon receiving a Golden Globe for his masterpiece thriller, Parasite“Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” A shame really that instead of uplifting global cinema, Hollywood continues to co-opt non-English language films for their own profits – most recently, with Netflix’s Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer, The Guiltyitself a near scene-for-scene adaptation of the 2018 Danish film of the same name.

Still from Danish film Riders of Justice, starring Mads Mikkelsen

Bitterness aside for a moment, Riders of Justice’s original co-writers Jensen and Nikolaj Arcel will also write the English-language version of their “ageing man guns down everyone to avenge their family” film, about a war vet who returns home to care for his teenage daughter after his wife is killed in a tragic train accident – or so it seems, until a team of statistics experts claim foul play.

The adaptation will be produced by 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen, who are still riding their Free Guy commercial and critical success. It’s still very early days on the production, so no word yet on who might be directing and starring in this version.

“There are few films that balance the action, emotion, and dark humour that Anders did so successfully in Riders of Justice,” said Lionsgate president of production, Erin Westerman. “We’re confident that the movie will translate perfectly to English-language audiences as well.”

For the love of Mikkelsen, can’t English-language audiences just ride over that subtitles barrier and give “foreign” films the justice they deserve?

HEROQUEST COMES TO UK RETAIL

HEROQUEST

A modern version of the classic boardgame HeroQuest will be available to buy via UK stores from the 15th of January 2022.

This semi-coop board game has one player taking on the role of the evil wizard Zargon and his hoard of monsters, while 4 mythical heroes team up to solve puzzles, bash beasties and win the day. The new set is the basic game, and comes with over 65 detailed miniatures and 14 quests. It’s seen by many as a solid introduction to fantasy table top gaming.

Heroquest originally came out in 1989 and was the result of two UK games companies teaming up.  It sparked new interest in fantasy table top games that continue to this day. The original has long been out of print, but the rights now belong to Hasbro. The new game was announced last year and was only available via Hasbro’s HasLab  pre-ordering service or approved distributors. (In the UK this has been geek-merch website Zavvi.)  Those pre-ordered games are now en-route, which means that those who missed their chance will soon be able to buy their own copy of the game via your friendly local games store, as well as Amazon, Smyths etc.

Further expansions have already been announced, expect to see  news about a new character expansion pack called Commander of the Guardian Knights appear soon. Modern versions of old-school expansions such as Return of the Witch Lord and Kellar’s Keep made up part of last year’s pre-ordering campaign and though they aren’t on general sale right now, are expected to appear some time in 2022.
