After two years of development, the Amy Adams-fronted horror Nightbitch is ready to tear up the screen. Searchlight has picked up worldwide rights on the feature, teaming with Annapurna on the adaptation of the Rachel Yoder novel.

Nightbitch is being written and directed by Marielle Heller, the excellent filmmaker behind Oscar-nominated films Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Adams was most recently seen in Netflix’s The Woman in the Window, and will next star in Disenchanted, a sequel to her 2007 fairy tale musical Enchanted.

Yoder’s novel tells the story of a woman who finds herself in a mind-bending and energy-sapping routine of raising a toddler in a suburban home while her husband goes on extended business trips. The woman slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine.

The book was described by critics as a “mischievous commentary on the neuroses of modern womanhood” and its author praised for infusing “new life into the cold, furry flesh of the monstrous femme”. The project is being labelled a darkly comic neo-horror, and also sounds like some good ol’ werewolf fun. Nightbitch reportedly has eyes on a September filming start date, and will stream on Hulu.
