Next year we’ll see two rival Snow White projects duking it out for our attentions, and since both studios have just released their first images of the titular teen, we thought it’d be interesting to do an early compare an contrast.

First up, here’s Lily Collins as she’ll appear in Tarsem Singh’s untitled Snow White project…

Ahhh, Walt Disney would be proud! All that’s missing is a shiny apple and an animated budgie.

And here’s the first look at TWILIGHT’s Kristen Stewart in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN…

Whoa! Don’t think many of us were expecting that. It all sounded very jolly to Starburst when we were reporting on the casting of the dwarves recently! But Universal obviously have other ideas. Producer Joe Roth pitches this take as something “the Brothers Grimm would be proud of; a film with the size, scope and appetite of LORD OF THE RINGS.” (Appetite? What does that have to do with anything?! Hope it ain’t a crack at Jackson’s weight.)

Fancy checking out the rest of the cast? Why not…

Oddly, Universal hadn’t prepped a similar poster for the assembled dwarves at the time of writing, but we do have a low-res look at them…

Love the character designs on these guys! And especially when you factor in the talent portraying them – Nick Frost, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Izzard, Ian McShane, and Stephen Graham. Though I can’t quite put the names to the faces due to the quality of the image. Is that Nick Frost far left?!

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN may mean well – re-imagining the princess as a tough-as-nails warrior women will hopefully provide audiences with a new, strong female role model (much needed in this post-TWILIGHT era), but Universal might sadly find it a struggle to get a male demographic to commit to buying a ticket to anything with the words ‘Snow White’ in the title, ‘Huntsman’ or not. As disappointing as that may be, just ask Disney, who recently had to change the title and marketing campaign behind TANGLED for fear of alienating a male audience (it was originally called RAPUNZEL).

Tarsem Singh’s got a lot of work to do if he’s going to make an impact with his take of the fairytale – it looks like he’s going to be going up against a marketing monster. Though if you’ve checked out any of his previous work – THE CELL; THE FALL; or the up-coming IMMORTALS – you’re sure to agree that his version will be the most visually creative. Let’s wish him and Lily lots of luck – they’re going to need it!

Tarsem’s SNOW WHITE bows first with a March 2012 release, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN arrives two months later in June.

Which SNOW WHITE project, if any, are you looking forward to? Can Kristen Stewart muster enough energy to pull this off? And who the hell is Lily Collins anyway?! Let us know with your comments below!
