The excellent Robert Knepper has joined the cast of the Dark Horse comic book adaptation R.I.P.D. as a spirit (or ‘deado’ if we’re using the mythology’s appropriate lingo).

Knepper has previously starred in such genre fare as HEROES and HBO’s cruelly truncated CARNIVALE, but is arguably best known for his role as the charmingly psychotic T-Bag in the wildly inconsistent PRISON BREAK.

Knepper is a latecomer to the flick, joining the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, and Mary-Louise Parker who have been shooting in Boston for some weeks now. Want to check out a few shots from the set? Why not!

For those unfamiliar with Peter Lenkov’s comic book, here’s the official synopsis:

“Welcome to the Rest in Peace Department–the devoted, yet dead, officers of divine law enforcement “patrolling the deadbeat … reporting to one boss.” Yep–THAT boss. Nick Cruz died an untimely death at the height of his personal and professional life. Why did he join the R.I.P.D.? Well, not knowing the identity of his killer has left his soul a bit … restless. Now he hunts some of the most fiendish creatures, hoping for the chance to find out who set him up so he can get into heaven.”

The movie is being helmed by RED director Robert Schwente (pictured having a point-off with Reynolds in the photo above) and is written by Phil Hay (of CLASH OF THE TITANS and AEON FLUX fame).

Universal are betting heavy with this one, releasing the movie slap-bang in the middle of the summer season of 2013. Yep, you read right. ’13. Never ceases to amaze just how long post-production FX work actually takes.
