Cutesy online game DOCTOR WHO: WORLDS IN TIME will cease operation on February 28th, 2014, according to a notice on the game’s website. The writing has been on the wall for the game for some time; players have complained that critical bugs such as errors when logging in have been fixed slowly and microtransactions were suspended a short while ago. When a game stops trying to take in players and money, it’s rarely a good sign. Subscribers were also informed of the cancellation by email.

DOCTOR WHO: WORLDS IN TIME is a massively multiplayer online role-playing  game in which your avatar is a cutesy character who has to solve a variety of puzzles in order to help The Doctor save the universe. The game attempted to mix the safe social environment of games such as CLUB PENGUIN with casual puzzlers such as BEJEWELLED and was intended for younger gamers. Sadly, it completely lacked the charm and sense of adventure of the source material and has had a dwindling fanbase during its short two-year run. It will be missed by very few people.

We can only hope that if someone tries to bring The Doctor and companions to the world of gaming again that they emulate Cubicle 7’s excellent (and highly successful) tabletop roleplaying game DOCTOR WHO: ADVENTURES IN TIME AND SPACE and make sure that they inject fun and mystery into every possible element.
