With this week having already confirmed that the next Wolverine movie will be titled Logan, not to mention giving us a look at Sir Patrick Stewart as an elderly Professor X, now comes some juicy plot details on James Mangold’s follow-up to The Wolverine.

It goes without saying, but there’s plenty of potential spoilers ahead, so don’t say you weren’t warned…

The Wrap has the scoop on the Logan plot, which, as we’ve previously reported, will have elements of Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan dotted throughout it. In more meaty details, the film will be set in 2024 and will be darker than any X-Men movie to date. As for Hugh Jackman’s Wolvie, he’ll be in a bad way. Looking rough and drinking plenty, Logan spends his days driving around in a beat-up 2024 Chrysler 300 limo that’s been modified to look more futuristic. Additionally, ol’ Canucklehead isn’t well at all, with him being sick and seeing his powers fading, including his healing ability being slowed down dramatically.

When the Logan title was revealed earlier in the week, we were also given a poster for the film – a poster showing Wolverine holding hands with a child. As expected, that child will indeed be X-23, a young female Wolverine clone from the comic book realm (who was actually initially created for the animated X-Men: Evolution series). In this troubled future, mutant births are a rarity, and the government is snuffling up any and all young mutants and turning them into killing machines. Jackman’s Wolverine stumbles across this tormented young girl – who has two claws in comparison to Wolverine’s three – and becomes a mentor to her.

As for Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, he’s similarly not in a good way, either. In fact, his powers are majorly unstable and he can barely even remember Wolverine. This is where Stephen Merchant comes in, with his mystery role to be that of Caliban, an Albino mutant who helps to take care of Xavier.

At present, this has all yet to be confirmed by anybody involved in the film, but The Wrap are usually bang on with their scoops, so expect plenty of the above to be true.

Logan is currently set for a March 3rd, 2017 release.
