With Spider-Man now confirmed to be swinging into the MCU in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, many have been speculating who will play this latest incarnation of the Wallcrawler. Whilst most people are looking at potential Peter Parkers, there’s a rumour that this iteration of Spidey may not actually be Parker at all.

The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider, who is often on the money with his reports, is suggesting that the next Spider-Man will not be white and will likely not be Peter Parker. He said, “This is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not gonna be white. Spider-Man is not gonna be white. I am 95% sure. Spider-Man’s gonna be, most likely, black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white. I don’t think it’s going to be Peter Parker. I really feel strongly. Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book character.”

Sneider later added, “White actors are still going out for Spider-Man but their reps are telling me they think Sony is leaning ‘ethnic.’”

It goes without saying, but take all of this with a pinch of salt. Early word from Marvel Studios/Disney and Sony seemed to suggest that this version of Spidey would indeed be Peter Parker, although there has been some suggestions that the actor who takes on the role of Parker may not necessarily be white. As long as Peter had the familiar mannerisms that fans know and love, how important is the actor’s race or ethnicity who is playing him?

If Parker’s ethnicity was to be changed for the big screen, this wouldn’t be the first time that a comic book character has changed race. Michael Clarke Duncan did wonders as The Kingpin in the Ben Affleck-starring DAREDEVIL, Laurence Fishburne is the current cinematic Perry White, then there’s Jesse L. Martin and Candice Patton as Joe and Iris West, respectively, in The CW’s THE FLASH, and there’s also the Michael B. Jordan take on Johnny Storm/the Human Torch in Josh Trank’s upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR. That said, if the stories of this Spidey not actually being Peter Parker are true, obviously that then opens up the possibility of the Miles Morales version of the Wallcrawler.

Either way, Spidey will makes his MCU debut when CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR arrives on May 6th, 2015 before then getting his own 2017 solo movie.
