…Probably not, but that hasn’t stopped The Sun from running the rumour that the megastar is ‘in talks’ with J.J. Abrams to shoot a cameo in the upcoming sequel. Reportedly the Cruiser has been in London all week, and has been spotted meeting Abrams, an old pal since the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III days. Cruise, who at the time was an ALIAS fan (he hadn’t got to Season 4 yet), famously hand-picked the then TV director to helm the third in his super-spy franchise, thus giving Abrams his feature debut and launching his successful big-screen career. Could Cruise, a long time STAR WARS lover, now be calling in that favour?

It’s worth noting that even if he does cameo it wouldn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing even for Cruise-detractors; the star has no qualms donning large amounts of latex if the role requires – see TROPIC THUNDER, in which he appears as the grotesque creation Les Grossman, a part he enjoyed so much he even reprised him at a later MTV Movie Awards (there was also talk of a dedicated spin-off film at one point). Cruise could very well end up playing the role of Bib Fortuna’s cousin knocking around in the background! (Again, probably not.) For the record this writer is not a Cruise hater, never have been; his recent turn as Officer Connors Cage in EDGE OF TOMORROW was terrific, but that said I’d find his presence in EPISODE VII, like most, a little too distracting (unless he suitably disguised that is). We’re sure Abrams is smart enough to realise that too, but we’ll keep you updated…

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will hit cinemas May 18th, 2016.
