Tired of having pencils jammed up their arse, the Trolls have set their sights on becoming movie stars instead.

Invented in 1959 by a Danish woodcutter, the ugly little effers have gone on to make billions in merchandise revenue, with video game, cartoons, and confectionary all spinning off from the highly collectable dolls themselves.

Now DreamWorks Animation – the studio behind such smash hits as SHREK, KUNG-FU PANDA and MADAGASGAR – plan to get the brand on the big-screen in a new CG-animated movie franchise; and not just that, they’ve bought the Troll doll brand outright, meaning they’ll be the ones in charge of any further product. If that doesn’t say confidence, I don’t know what does.

The last time the movie was mentioned (Summer 2012), voice-talent was rumoured to include Chloe Grace Moretz and Jason Schwartzman, but it remains to be seen whether that will still be the case. We’ll have more on TROLLS as it develops…
