In a press release this morning, producers Skydance and Paramount have confirmed that TERMINATOR 5 will be released on 26th June 2015 and will be the first in a new “rebooted” TERMINATOR trilogy.

The new trilogy is described as “stand-alone”, hinting at a storyline free from links to the previous films. This is good news for those who want to forget 2009’s dire SALVATION, but perhaps not so good for devotees of James Cameron’s classics. How the reboot will work is uncertain; it may be a full-on reboot, an original story set in the same universe, or have a connection between series in a similar manner to JJ Abrams’ STAR TREK.

However, Arnold Schwarzenegger, star of the original three films, has previously stated that he’ll be back (there must be a joke in there somewhere) for TERMINATOR 5, though whether that’s anything more than a cameo is yet to be confirmed.

Though Laeta Kalorgridis (AVATAR / SHUTTER ISLAND) and Patrick Lussier (DRIVE ANGRY) are on board to write the screenplay, no director is currently known to be attached. Check back on Starburst for further updates.
