Despite THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 suffering massively mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, Sony Pictures still has some hefty plans for their Wallcrawler-infested world. Yes, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 has been pushed way back to 2018 but the studio is putting a lot of hope in their VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX spin-off movies. Speaking to MTV, writer/director Alex Kurtzman has teased what he has in store for VENOM.

Kurtzman said, “The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can’t do with Spider-Man. Venom is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He’s a much darker character.”

After a so-so start to their relaunched Spidey-verse, a dark, sinister Venom-centric film could be great for Sony. Thing is, is this all too soon? We’ve only seen two Spider-Man solo movies in this latest cinematic world yet we’ve had appearances and allusions to so, so many villains, plus rumours of Carnage to join Venom in this particular spin-off. Yes, Venom is one the greatest Spider-Man characters of all time, but would it be better to hold off on bringing him into the fold just yet? And then there’s the question of just which version of Venom is introduced; do they take the Eddie Brock route, the Flash Thompson route, the Mac Gargan route or one of the other possibilities?

No exact release date has been given for Kurtzman’s VENOM at this stage, although it, along with THE SINISTER SIX, will be hitting screens before Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3, which is looking at a 2018 release.
