Now, now Zack, let’s not have a scene!

Poor Zack Snyder is obviously feeling the sting from a comment that producer Joel Silver made last week. The comment in question claimed that Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Watchmen would have been a “much better movie” than the one Snyder made. According to the producer, Gilliam had planned an ending in which Ozymandias convinces Dr Manhattan to travel back in time and prevent his own creation.

Speaking to The Huffington Post Snyder states that Gilliam’s ending would have alienated the die-hard fans of Alan Moore’s ground breaking graphic tale. “If you read the Gilliam ending, it’s completely insane,” says Snyder. “Yeah, the fans would have stormed the castle on that one. So, honestly, I made Watchmen for myself. It’s probably my favourite movie that I’ve made. And I love the graphic novel and I really love everything about the movie.”

He continues: “I love the style. I just love the movie and it was a labour of love. And I made it because I knew that the studio would have made the movie anyway and they would have made it crazy. So, finally I made it to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world.” Ouch! That’s a tad harsh!

Commenting on how Gilliam planned to end his movie Zack had this to say, “It would be like if you were doing Romeo and Juliet and instead of them waking up in the grave area, they would have time-travelled back in time and none of it would have happened.”

Had Watchmen been released now, rather than five years ago, the Man of Steel director imagines his film would have had an entirely different reception, as he explains: “I feel like Watchmen came out at sort of the height of the snarky Internet fanboy – like, when he had his biggest strength. And I think if that movie came out now – and this is just my opinion – because now that we’ve had Avengers and comic book culture is well established, I think people would realise that the movie is a satire.”

It would be interesting to know what Mr Gilliam thinks of all this considering he didn’t even make the actual comments. I suspect we’ll never know though. He’s probably got more important things on his mind other than a film he never made.
