Finally, a retro game adaptation we can get behind! New Line Cinema have announced they have snagged the rights to the 1986 property and plan to bring the giant, city-levelling mutant Gorilla, Lizard, and Werewolf to our cinema screens.

Why is New Line Pictures’ proposed RAMPAGE movie any different than Universal’s ASTEROIDS or BATTLESHIP (which have both caused much annoyance amongst the Starburst staffers)? Because it comes complete with an actual concept, and not just a title.

Ok, so the story is quite slight – a trio of humans are mutated into the aforementioned beasts by the villains at Scumlabs, and, understandably miffed, they take to the streets to go on the titular rampage – but it’s at least a jumping off point!

The game itself allowed up to three players to control the monsters, with the goal being to destroy as many buildings as possible while gobbling up anything within your path. Tons o’ fun.

Producer John Rickard (FINAL DESTINATION, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) is currently searching for a writer to bring it to life – one hell of a tough gig if they choose to stick close to the source and have the trio remain the protagonists. Note to die-hard RAMPAGE fans, there will be changes!

If this project successfully makes it through development, it will mean that fans of the giant-monster movies of old are in for an exciting few years, as RAMPAGE will be stomping into our multiplexes right behind Legendary Pictures GODZILLA reboot and Guillermo Del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM.
