Proving once and for all that it’s not just Americans that schlep to their local picture house, PACIFIC RIM has erred ever closer to sequel territory on the back of robust international earnings – particularly in China, where the film’s $9 million opening haul is a record setter.

The giant-robots-versus-gianter-beasties flick from world’s busiest man Guillermo del Toro fell far short of expectations Stateside with $86.4 million and in our own fair Blighty with $10.7 million. Internationally however… well, it seems that Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots versus Godzilla has been a long gestating fantasy, currently grossing roughly $130 million.

Absolutely nothing is set in stone right now, however, with the film likely not having made any sort of profit. With a budget anywhere between $180-200 million and an undisclosed marketing budget that could be best described as ‘chunky’, PACIFIC RIM will need to gross a bit more on top of its $226 million collective gross to guarantee the sweet vindication of sequel-dom.

How ridiculous is that idea? “A quarter of a billion dollars isn’t enough.” Ladies and gentleman: Hollywood.

Anyhow, should a sequel come crawling into existence – likely sometime around 2020 judging by del Toro’s current constipated slate – what does everyone want to see? More Jaegers, more Kaijus, more dodgy accents, more apocalypse cancelling?
