As reported earlier today, in an unexpected move for the producers of KICK-ASS 2 star Jim Carrey withdrew support for the upcoming superhero sequel, claiming December’s Sandy Hook Elementary shooting has drastically changed his viewpoint on the film’s violent content.

Anyone who’s seen Matthew Vaughn’s KICK-ASS or read Mark Millar’s comics, the source material for both films, will remember seeing the eponymous hero and his pre-teen sidekick Hit-Girl punch, kick, and blast their way through a series of garishly over-the-top set pieces. We can expect the same comic book-style content from the sequel, which stars Carrey as new supporting hero Colonel Stars and Stripes.

Though Carrey has before expressed passionate support of gun control measures, this about-turn left the KICK-ASS creator baffled. In a blog post, Millar responded:

“Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin. A sequel to the picture that gave us HIT-GIRL was always going to have some blood on the floor and this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much. … This is fiction and like Tarantino and Peckinpah, Scorcese and Eastwood, John Boorman, Oliver Stone and Chan-Wook Park, Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless body-count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence”
