Last year’s DREDD was a hit amongst fans and critics alike. Great formula for a sequel to be greenlit, right? Sadly not. The film’s $36 million at the box office – it had a $45 million budget – meant that Lionsgate went cold on a sequel. There was talk of a sequel taking place in the form of a comic book, but a cinematic outing was ruled out. Star Karl Urban has been promoting RIDDICK at San Diego’s Comic-Con, and Airlock Alpha reports that he is still hopeful of another outing as everyone’s favourite Law Enforcer.

Urban revealed that he has met with writer/producer Alex Garland to look at how to work a sequel. He added, “It’s certainly my hope that we get to make more. Clearly it has found an audience. The home video sales for DREDD just went through the roof. I think it sold 650,000 units in the first week.”

Urban continued, “It’s amazing how these things occur. Not to compare it directly to BLADE RUNNER, but when BLADE RUNNER came out it was a film that didn’t necessarily do what you thought that it should have done at the box office. I feel the same way about DREDD. The reviews were overwhelmingly fantastic, but for whatever reason it didn’t do the box office numbers that it should have.”

Urban is now looking for fans to assist in the push for a sequel, saying, “I think the more people that campaign for it, the more people that e-mail, Twitter and write in to Lionsgate and say ‘We want to see more of this’, then the more likelihood it is that we’ll get to see that. We certainly are doing everything we can to ensure that happens.”

It would be a shame if Urban didn’t get to don the helmet again, as DREDD gave fans the film that they had previously been waiting for. Still, it beggars the question as to why the film fared so poorly at the box office.

Here’s hoping there’s more to report on a DREDD sequel in the future.
