We suppose it was inevitable really. In London last night to promote The Last Stand, Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed he is involved with the currently in development fifth instalment of the Terminator franchise.

Annie didn’t offer many details other that to confirm that, as previously rumoured, he is on board to reprise his most iconic character once again. No news yet on how extensive his involvement will be, but it’s probably safe to assume it’ll be more than his brief CGI assisted cameo last time around.

Development on a fifth Terminator film has stepped up a gear recently after producer Megan Ellison last week hired writers Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier who, between them have credits on the likes of Avatar, Shutter Island and My Bloody Valentine.

Arnie has hinted on several occasions that he’d be open to appear in a new Terminator film, but this is the first time he’s confirmed he’s definitely on board. Obviously we wouldn’t like to speculate on whether his decision was prompted by the failure of The Last Stand at the U.S. box office, but considering the previous instalment, 2009’s distinctly underwhelming Terminator Salvation grossed over $300M worldwide, a new Terminator is the closest thing Arnie’s got to a sure thing.

This is the third sequel Schwarzenegger currently has in development – Triplets, the sequel to his 1988 hit Twins is on its way, as is King Conan.
