Toni Basil got it wrong: Mickey is not fine. In fact, he’s getting killed over and over, in the first trailer for Mickey 17, the long-awaited follow up to Bong Joon-ho’s Best Picture winner, Parasite.
In the tongue-in-cheek, screwball sci-fi film, Robert Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, a space colonist known as an expendable. Expendables do the most dangerous jobs the colony has to offer, and often die in the process, only to be brought back to life via human printing technology.
Mickey 17 also stars Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, with Bong penning the script based on the book Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. In the novel, Mickey 7 – the 7th version of this crewmember – is left for dead on a mission but survives. When he returns to base, he discovers that Mickey 8, a clone of himself, has already been created – which is a problem because the idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they would likely be thrown into the recycler for protein. The feature promises to explore themes of human printing, identity, and space colonisation, with the South Korean filmmaker stating at a prior event that this is the story of “a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world.”
