With everything seemingly fair game for a reboot, remake, relaunch, reimagining or reimaging these days, now comes word that Lethal Weapon is finally getting a long-discussed makeover for the small screen.

After stories emerged late last year, The Wrap now has word that FOX has ordered a Lethal Weapon pilot, which will be an adaptation of the classic 1987 movie that starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Terminator Salvation’s McG has been confirmed to be executive producing and directing, and Damon Wayans Sr., best known for the likes of In Living Color and My Wife and Kids, has already landed the lead role of Roger Murtaugh, which was the part played by Glover in the original movie. Matt Miller will be writing the hour-long pilot.

The official synopsis for the adaptation reads:

When Texas cop and former Navy SEAL Martin Riggs suffers the loss of his wife and baby, he moves to Los Angeles to start anew. There, he gets partnered with LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh, who, having recently suffered a “minor” heart attack, must avoid any stress in his life.

After the success of the first film, which still stands as a favourite of ‘80s cinema, sequels followed in 1989, 1992 and 1998.

Expect more on this new Lethal Weapon project as it develops.
