Thanks to a tweet from Fantastic Fest, confirmation comes that the slow-burning MARTYRS remake is gaining steam and moving forward. The early sales poster, out of Berlin’s European Film Market, boasts directing duo The Goetz Brothers (of 2013’s SCENIC ROUTE) on board.
The remake, produced by Blumhouse and the Safran Company, tells the story of a woman who tracks down the family that imprisoned her as a child. Lazy labels are being bandied around, the film dubbed ‘the ultimate horror movie’, a tall order, given the original’s ultra-graphic content.
Coming soon to a screen near you…
The original 2008 French shocker proved to be a litmus test, gauging how far genre fans were willing to delve into the depraved. Making US torture porn took tame by comparison, MARTYRS certainly wasn’t for the sensitive of heart. If indeed the Goetz siblings have upped the ante, you can’t help but think it’ll be too ludicrous to take seriously.
